I have been having this problem with starting when the car its warm recently where it will kick over no worries but rev up way too high (2000rpm) then die. It will do this a couple of times before it starts normally or i manage to get the revs back up by giving it some gas. I was trying to figure out why it was doing it by giving it a rev and found that when give it a couple of revs (to about 2-2500rpm) in a row it will stall out in the same fasion. Whats the go? running rich or idle control issues or something else? The car is a 97 EL ghia BTW.

check your throttle body is clean, check your filters, air, oil and fuel. There is not alot to making a falcon run, if this fails to help, then its time to start looking at fuel pumps, injectors, I doubt leads or dizzy.
I would certainly be looking for a vac leak too, high idle with no throttle suggests an air leak that is increasing the base idle without your assistance. A can of throttle body cleaner is very hand for diagnosing this too. find your vac lines, with the car running spray it on the lines, you will see it get sucked in if there is a crack or split.
