My 1990 EA sedan has a starting problem but not all the time.
Does not matter if hot or cold engine. Turn motor over and it takes usually 3 tries before it starts. The only thing I have noticed is that when you turn on the ignition you hear the pump do it 2 second run, if the sound is one tone then it does not start but if the sound changes it does start. It sounds like it does not get up pressure all the time. Car runs faultlessly otherwise. Could it be a faulty pressure reg ????? Any ideas or help very much appreciated

might be a blocked fuel filter?

Its all a process of elimination, if you dont know when your filter was last changed, change it, then if it still the same, it wasnt that. Do EAs have a internal and external pump? or just the internal one? maybe your pump rooted.

sure sounds like the pump.... When my pumps on ED and EF went the first sign was hard starting. New pumps and off she went first turn.

change ya filter first mate, and try it, then hit the pump, i doubt fuel reg although it could be possible. when it does it how do you get it started, constant turning off and on again?? or do you have to leave it,

I also say, change the fuel filter.
bowsaw...EA's only had the internal one and their is also an internal filter which may be blocked....but i suggest getting the external filter done first. BTW check your battery terminal wires...they may also be corroding, just something else to look out for. phong =P~

Thanks for the advice, but if the filter was blocking the fuel pump would change tone because it was building pressure trying to get fuel through, but it does not start when the pump runs free and starts when the pump is loaded.

Well I fixed the problem as the car died in the A--E the other day, guess what....no fuel pump noise and no pressure.
Replaced the pump and all systems go. Thanks for those who gave info.. Cheers
