hey guys
was driving my EF Falcon to girlfriends last night, just came out of a round a bout and the alternator light came on. instantly knowing the belt had snapped/fallen off, i pulled over (with no powersteering) and shut her down before any damage could be done got her on a tilt tray (for the 3rd time) to the mechanics. just rang up and told me that the rubbers on the harmonic balancer had separated, worked loose and flicked the belt off up for new balancer/rubbers, belt and tensioner pulleys for $300 bux can this happen...just about to pull the gregorys out and read up on her...but does it sound plausible?

yeah, harmonic balancers can definately wear out. It happened to my EF futura in about 1998 cost me a hell of a lot more than that though, luckily I was able to claim the money back from my extended warranty.

Yes. I had my balancer let go, but never to the point where it spat the belt.
Balancer, $100ish, belt $30-$50 ish, dont know if the tensioner really needs replacing? Persoanlly i'd have it towed home and do it myself.

yeh
the tensioner doesnt need replacing, only the pulleys i was playin with it last night (whilst waiting for RACQ) and the pulleys squealed quite a bit and offered some resistance, so they are a lil stuffed it seems ok then, im not being taken for too much of a ride then, thanks guys id get it home but it was 15km from my house. i only get 10km free towing distance (for the price i pay), after that the price quickly rises

Well yeah if the idlers need replacing, also a bit of labour on top of that then $300 sounds like a pretty good deal.
Ask em to whack on nuline metal pulleys instead of the s**t ford plastic numbers!

It's bolted onto the crankshaft of the engine - front of the motor, bottom dead centre. You may find that the actual balancer is concealed by the pulley. Heck, on an I6 - it might even be combined into the same unit?? But yeah - it's on the crank, at the front of the motor.

it's not un common for things like that to happen.
I've seen worse. try one rib from a 4pk belt came off worked it's way past the timing cover and under the timing belt on a 4cyl magna. 8 bent valves. |

whoa, i feel a bit better now!
yeh it was just general wear and tear....stiffened/broekn rubbers the culprit. 230000 on the clock it was probably all due tell ya what, its a lot less noisy now!
