i was working on my mates 4.0L and his spark plug will not come out.
it was quite tight to crack, then it loosened off for a full turn then struggled to get another turn, then binded up.

the plug is probably 1/4 of the way out.
we saturated it with wd40, left it, came back tightened it up, loosened it (did that about 10 times) and it will not come out.

what to do?? i don't want to break it in there, or we're screwed!!

whoever put it in there probably crossthreaded it, either that or the plug has seized and then stripped the thread when you tried to remove it

basicly keep doing what you're doing.

only go get some bolt off. not WD40

then just back and forward until it come out.

then get a sparkplug thread chaser to fix it. or you may need to helicoil it.
just make sure you put loads of grease on the chaser or helicoil cutter to try and stop too much sworf droping in the cyl

Actualy you ain't got much of a choice:

1) continue removing the plug, and pray to all the Automotive Gods that it comes out without destroying the thread. If so you is bloody lucky :D :D

2) What has happened is probly that who-ever put the plug in last didn't put oil on the thread, so it has seized. The ONLY answer to that is to remove the head, and have the tread helicoiled.

Now this presents a lot of possibilities: while you have the head off, you can replace it with maybe a JMM item. Or get your own head done to XR6 specs. You can also replace the crappy head gasket with a JMM item (no, I don't work for him, but I have used is head gaskets, and they actualy work!! :D :D )

You could also put in a cam.

it's not my car and i don't think we'll be putting anything special in it.

if it were my car, the head would already be off.

you dont have to take it off to fix it. and you can get a AU headgasket for less then half the price of a JMM one. and get better heads for cheaper then a JMM one.

What the hell, who here puts oil on the thread of their spark plugs? It would only burn and possibly help cause the thread to f**k up anyway...

It is possible the head gasket is leaking coolant into the cylinder and has caused the thread to rust. This happened to me on cyl #6 and I just kept on screwing it in and out, finally it came out, and a new plug went straight back in no worries.

Au head gasket Eh! Tell me more. Do they fit on the EF/EL head? and are they less likely to leak than the EF/EL ones I thought the cause of The problems with leaking heads on the EF/EL was because of head warpage. Someone correct me if I am wrong?

ok I will correct you.. your right and wrong.

but an alloy head on and Iron block have different growth rates under temperaturebecarude of these growth rates either the head will warp, but just get it machined, or the gasket will give out, thats part of its job.
A jim mock head is not going to resist warping any more or less than a stock head infact it may be more prone to warping as the car will be getting driven harder and higher temps.

the AU head gasket fists straight in to the e series falcs. they are a better gasket, different material and what not, but its 1.30 in the morning, I've had too much scotch to remeber the details, other than an AU head gasket can definatly be used, a JMM head will warp just as easy as your stock head, it pays to have someone who knows what the hell they are doing,

so I hope thats given you some direction, If I wake up in the morning and can remember what the significance or the AU gasket being better is I'll post it..

But don't think JMM is the be all and end all of e series gear there are alot of guys out there doing top quality gear for the FORD's it pays to shop around
