Hello
I have a couple of ideas at the moment and I'm trying to decide what to do. The first is to simply bolt on everything needed to change my BA mk2 XR6 into and XR6T. This sounds doable and relativelty straight forward. One thing I note from the workshop manual though is the compression ratios are different - ie 8.7:1 for the T and 9.7:1 for the NA What difference will this mean practically? Will it just mean I cannot extract much more power than the 240KW I would hope to achieve by bolting on the turbo setup etc? Or will it mean I will not even achieve the 240KW? Second option is to do a heart transplant - and I have had it suggested that a 270KW Typhoon motor and all accessories could be swapped in. Is this an "easy" transplant - ie will my existing gearbox etc simply mate up and it will be a clean install - or is there something that will not gel? Obviously I know all the computer bits need to change too - and this is an area that concerns me - being non-mechanical. It's all well and good getting everything to bolt together - but I have nightmares of the computer system stopping it all working for some reason or another. Cheers for any comments

Well - here's another interesting fact to throw into the mix.
I just spoke to a guy selling the various motors etc. He said the green topped E-gas motors are internally the same spec as the Typhoon motors? He thought the cheapest option would be to get one of these, and then add all of the turbo gear on top of that ! This might be old news to some of you - but it was new news to me! Another confusing option. Anybody able to confirm/refute the claim on the base motor?

Another confusing option. Anybody able to confirm/refute the claim on the base motor? He is wrong. The rods are the same. Compression is higher again at 10.3:1. The pistons arent of the floating type either. Put a typhoon motor, engine bay loom and ECU in yours. Drag it to ford and they will recalibrate your car to the new ECU and off you go. You can make rougly 240rwkw on the NA bottom end before the compression becomes an issue if you want to go that way but I wouldnt. Even a stock turbo motor can easily make 300rwkw on standard internals. The later model ones are just as strong as a typhoon motor. |

Cool
Thanks for the reply. OK - I was almost sold on the complete Typhoon transplant anyway. Would give a better base for nice gains from mods later Thought the standard motor would probably be at it's limit just with the turbo bolt on. Next question: Will it be compatible with an injected LPG system?

I have now had it confirmed that;
a) the typhonn motor should slip in easily - with all associated wiring/computer; and b) I will be able to fit an injected LPG system that will help me keep my running costs down (daily driver minimum 100kms a day just to get to work and back) So - it looks like a green light ! Just need the green notes. I would need to get my own intercooler and exhaust system Any other helpful comments/suggestions/warnings? Go a stock Typhoon intercooler and exhaust system ?

why a typhoon motor? drop in a BFMKII XR6T motor, same thing but cheaper!

Isn't that a 245KW motor vs a 270KW motor?
And doesn't the Typhoon have a larger turbo? or same? I'll have to ask if there is a price differential. Being natually aspirated I'm not as clued up as I should be on turbo specifics

same motor, same turbo, just that the typhoon runs a bit more boost, but we know how easy that is to increase, you can get the XR6T motor tuned to a safe 10 psi with no other mods, and will blow a typhoon away...
with the money you save you can buy a flash tuner, injectors, get it tuned, then your laughing... till you want more power!

Cool - sounds like a plan.
What power level does your BF have?

about 275 rwkw, its only tuned to about 9psi due to having the stock clutch still, but once thats sorted it should easily see 300rwkw @ 12 psi

I have an auto box - whatever came with a late BA Mk2
On the dash it goes up to 4 - but whether that means it is a 4 speed - or whether 4 plus overdrive = 5 I'm not sure. But I'm guessing the box and the need to run on LPG will be my limiting factors. Anything will be better than teh current power - I don't think I'll get bored with 300KW

All BF turbo motors have the same rods as the typhoon.
You have a btr auto, 4 gears plus lockup. the Turbo btr are stronger than standard xt.

For one I am pritty sure you can't get a BF computer to run in a BA. So a BA turbo motor would be the go.
I did alot of research on this before I did my wagon. The easiest way is to buy a complete BA turbo motor, bolt it all in then flash your standard ecu with a turbo tune that way you don't have to trailer it to ford and have them charge you an arm an a leg, Plus with what power you want you would have had to get a flash box anyway so you are saving in 2 spots there. The only thing with running the standard ECU is you have to run a aftermarket boost control. Alot easier running one of them the wiring up all the factory boost stuff anyway. Your standard gearbox will bolt up but they arn't as strong as the turbo boxes so it wont handle the power you are chasing for long. Finally gas injection systems are awesome I am currently looking at one for my wagon. There is a thread here on it some where from a stock xr6 turbo they got an easy 260rwkw's on gas.

Yes but your standard computer doesn't has the extra wiring plug for the boost control
