Hey all, I fitted a mini spool in my fairmont this afternoon!
Only took 1.5 hours. Much more fun to drive........ Need a manual now though! Bought the spool 4 $85 and fitted it myself. Anyways if the weather holds out for 2morrow night I should be racing at wsid. The car is stock besides the spool and a cat back exhaust which drops at the diff!!! Anyways its a dark green el fairmont! Im going to try and be one of the contesters for the burnout comp aswell.

A mini spool removes the spider gears in the diff, which locks it solid. A full spool on the other hand, remove the need for the mini spool, and instead uses the one piece of metal to hold the crown gear and to lock the two shaft and is therefore considered to be better. However, for small horsepower a mini spool should be fine. Mini spool: Full spool:

spool in a stock auto?
i dont think ud notice much improvment in acceleartion. Although she will get pretty sideways around corners am i right? lol and i would advise not to go in the burnout comp, u will most likely snap an axle and/or dont have enough power to do it properly and people will laugh at you... spool in a manual is a huge difference. try 4000 rpm launches powering off with s**t tyres.. yeh thats the s**t proof in the pudding EA S 5spd extractors exhaust did 15.9. put a spool and thermofan in, did 14.7 there ya go |

kosmond wrote: Its a locked dif both rear wheels spin If the powers there to spin both at once! ThinkTank wrote: What is needed to install the spool? Id be thinking youd need to remove the rear cover, remove the axles, slide out the standard diff after removing the caps, then remove the spider gears and chuck the spool in. Then replace everything. eed-250 wrote: i dont think ud notice much improvment in acceleartion
There would be no (read: nada, zilch, zippo, nothing, forget it) increase in acceleration unless you were experiencing wheel spin. And as the drags are generally dry, and being an auto, the only advantage would be able to stall it up slightly harder, but not much. If you get wheelspin in the dry (in a straight line) with an auto, I want to know how!

I get wheel spin in a straight line in my XF with auto. It has a 3000 stall in the borg warner and standard 2.77 diff, the twin gas research setup helps with it alot.[/img]

Well, for anyone who was bagging our Mr SQUEAK - I watched him take 2nd place in the burnout comp at WSID tonight. Top work.
2nd place to the EB XR8 belonging to yobboford. Good to see Fordmods running 1st and 2nd at a public burnout comp!!

Thanks waggin!
And just so you know straight line accel is increased as with the open wheel diff if I stalled it up and took off it would spin the wheel, and even at the drags I was still spinning off the line with the spool when stalled right up! But the main reason is for burnouts! And if anyone was at wsid you would have seen me letting loose and toasting a set of pirellis while on the rev limiter the whole time! So yes it can spin the wheels......... Ask waggin/chicken/yobboford and jase they were there! And the axle's will be fine, My old xh ute had a mini spool in it for over a year which sore constant revlimiter clutch dumps and everything not a problem! They are a lot stronger than most people think.....They are 28spline axles ( same as standard 9inch ) and they are 4 pin centers.
