you have to stop the valves dropping when removing the springs so.....
turn crank by hand until the piston is at its lowest in the cylinder your working on. Then stuff as much rope as you can in there though the spark plug hole, then turn the crank so the piston pushes all the rope hard against the valves..... theres no way that C*** will fall in there then !! do the rope trick 6 times and your done Repeat this process for each cylinder. Also make sure you have a DECENT valve spring removal tool, because if its a $50 repco special it will fall to pieces on the 1st spring and you will have a b**ch of a time doing the rest...... |

Thanks for your help, would u be able to recommend a decent valve compressor
And with the rope trick how do I know it's hard against the valves? I'm guessing that the crank Wont turn easily

yep turn the crank with a socket wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt till it stops
rope trick dodgy tool which fell apart on 1st spring, had to bodgy it up to finish the rest. Use a magnetic wand to fish out the collets which lock the retainer plate onto top of spring |

Getting a bit bored of the 977b , so I've decided to put in my 1521a. Not expecting a huge power increase but more torque, also it has potential with head work etc.
Any ways I've ordered some new valve springs. They are crow 7738-12 , same as a xr spring but installed at 1.820" 110lbs on seat 280 @ .5" lift Should be perfect not to heavy not to light. Straight fit. Ok what I'm asking is with the rope trick when I'm done installing the new spring I have to crank the engine backwards so I can get the rope out. Now isn't this bad cos it will take the tension off the chain giudes and make the chain loose possibly skipping a tooth ?? Or will it be fine it I reset the tensioner and check if it's skipped a tooth ? I could use compressed air to hold it up but if it fails, down goes my valve and off comes the head. Opinions ??

it will be fine mate, i cant see why it would skip a tooth, you probably got more chance of snapping a guide
but ive mucked around turning it back and forward setting up a vernier gear and nothing bad has come of it a couple times the valve would push in with the spring while i was winding it down with the spring compressor, so i would turn the crank back till the piston reached the bottom and feed some more rope in the cylinder also before starting each one, give the retainer a good whack with a socket and hammer as the retainers can bind with the collets |

Cheers mate,
Also what did u notice from going from 977b to 1521a ? Mine Is 114 lsa, do u think it will sound lumpy? I havnt seen a 1521a make over 155rwkw but that's with no head work , I've seen the 977b make 165-170 rwkw with head work so I reckon the 1521a will make good power with a port n polish , and head skimmed for more compression.
