If i turn the steering wheel it sometimes (usually) will stop as if you have reached the extremes of the rotation. you can push past and sometimes there is a squeak from the belts but it is very annoying. is this likely to be due to old belts of something worse?

Have you checked your power steering fluid level. If it is low it will cause a squeel, if it is very low it will cause hard steering.

Funny story..
I had this problem once.. one of the engine mounts had shat itself and the engine was lopsided causing the steering arm to hit the extractors while cornering, which meant no steering hehehe |

another thing is the bush which is at the bottom of the steering column (where it goes thru the firewall) will get old and brittle causing the steering to bind

Your pump might not be pumping enough pressure through your rack, causing the rack to have no pressure meaning no power assistance. Or your seals in your rack are buggered and your boots are fillin up with oil.
My guess is your pump, but also what the other guys have suggested is quite possible as well. If it is your pump, let me know

yer there is still fluid and its not a steering column bearing thing so i'm guessing its the pump
|
