just wondering what the sound difference is betweena sports exhaust with a straight through pipe vs. a hot dog in place of the rear resonator

well straight through is alot louder as it doesn not flow through any restrictions or baffels, hot dog will make things a little less noisy but still loud

he means replacing the resonator with a piece of pipe VS a hotdog
the resonator will kill off a lot of droning, but will still keep a good note

A sport exhaust with a straight through muffler and resinator would sound awsome with no dronning, but not be very loud (much louder than stock though).
A sport exhaust with a straight through muffler and hotdog would sound awsome, have a little dronning, and be pretty loud. This is the system I've got, and once I replace my hollowed out cat converter with a hi flow, it'll be the perfect volume, although in a few years when I don't like hearing the exhaust all the time I'd probably want it quiter. In the waggin I get a fair few complaints about it being very noisy in the back. A sport exhaust with a straight through muffler and nothing elsewould sound awsome, but drone a lot and be bloody loud! |

I dont like the sound of hot dogs, to rice for me, straight thru would be better, but to loud, asking for attention, from the coppers. Thats my opinion anyway, everyone to their own.

But a straight through muffler on it's own is louder than a set up with a straight through and hot dog! The louder the set up the more attention it draws... I've found that cops are cool with loud exhausts on a clean car - probably because they know it's a proper sports exhaust, not a removal of the exhaust system as most VL/VK's do! |

When (being the operative word) I get myself a new exhaust I will try to get a custome one which is nice and quiet.

LOL i think my XR6 is loud enough as it is. All ive done to it is removed the resonator, sounds really nice thou. Its got kind of a deep growl to it. But yeah as its stock once you go over 3500rpm its quiet as....... Oh well.

whats up with that? im thinking it could be my cat as m old engine fukt its self and blew all kinds of crap out and i havent put in the extracktors and hiflowcat in yet??? do u think extracktors wll make much of a differnce

Extractors don't seem to increase or decrease the noise. They just change the points on where it is louder or softer in the rev range.
Marmo, I'd be saying you should have a look at your cat converter then. It's a bad idea to leave a stuffed cat on a new ehaust as bits will blow into the new mufflers and damage them. The Lukey Turbo mufflers are quiter than the Lukey ultra flow straight through mufflers. The Turbo mufflers are also slightly more restrictive... |

A hot dog isn't a muffler, it's a resonator, which does nothing for sound levels, just removes higher frequencies.
The stock system isn't 3 mufflers, it's a resonator, then 2 mufflers. I took the muffler out of mine and it did f**k all. |

Actually on my Mom's EBII Fairmont and my EF GLi the stock system is 1 muffler with a resinator infront and behind it. If you can hear more road noise in the car, then your hear more exhaust too... You can often pick up a 2", 2 1/4" or 3" hi flow cat on eBay.com.au for under $200.00. Although I never see many 2 1/2"'s - I've been looking. I got quoted $220.00 installed for a 2 1/2" hi flow the other day at an exhaust shop - so that's a better option. |
