It is such a pain in the a** to get to the top of the dizzy though.. how did you guys change the lead? did you have to get under the car? Leads look like original motorcraft to me. rgds Frank Just put the car up on some ramps and work from underneath. While your there, it isn't hard to relocate the coil. I put mine in front of the airbox, nice high, dry and cool spot. Also if you have to park your car in a dodgy area for a while I just pull the coil lead off and put it in my pocket or just unplug the 12v injector style plug at the back off the coil.

I put a EL ECU in my car recently..
I put a hidden switch in the injector feed wire.. but I already have a pretty decent alarm so wasnt' really necessary. As for the coil, I was planning on moving it when I put the EL motor in. I have another coil and set of leads to try.. wonder why it happened to die a week after I changed the plugs. I was very careful with the leads... |

I can check the leads impedance with my multimeter.. does anyone know what the range should be for the Motorcraft leads?

NFI, but if you measure all of them and one's out then you could tell that way.

I know you said you went over it all, but are you sure all your plug leads are properly clicked onto both the dizzy terminals and spark plugs.
I also had a rough idle and slight miss after changing spark plugs, only to realise my no2 lead was loose at the spark plug and no3 lead had been bumped almost off its terminal at the dizzy because of the mess of wires under there.

yeah, figured that, just thought that if some of the others were on the way out I could catch them too..
perhaps I'll just replace the lot. |

When it first started missing, I actually pulled all the plugs out to see if one was fouled... put them all back in and made sure it was perfect. Also checked that they were plugged on the dizzy properly too. one must just have died. |

Yup..
The other week I was at supercheap and picked up a little spark plug all in one tool, (to clean gap and test plugs and leads) for 3 bucks... tonight I went out in the dark and put it up against the leads and let it flash to the beat.. sure enough, lead 2 is not consistant.. every few seconds it misses a beat, even at idle.. and that was not noticable at low rpm, it's only when you put the boot in that you noticed it. This tool is great, saved me a heap of messing around. 3 bucks.. can't go wrong. rgds Frank |

OFF THE SUBJECT : i just dont find it that hard to get the leads and dizzy cap on and off! OH and sweet idea about moving the coil may have have to steal your idea |

least I was able test all the leads while still on the car.. my hands are quite big (I have size 16 feet and hands to match) so getting to the top of the dizzy from underneath is an effort in itself.
Now I only have to replace 1 lead to fix the problem. In future, I think I'll just buy an intake manifold gasket and access it that way. |

i reakon its easier to change leads and dizzy with the log manifold than the bbm..lol
i just changed the dizzy on mine with the bbm. and its a magic trick in its self just to get the dizzy out. |

If the leads are sweet, and youve put in an injector cleaner a good way to check the injectors is to gently(careful now) crimp the fuel return line at the fuel rail. If the idle smoothes right out and runs better the injectors can be slightly fouled. Ive serviced heaps of them,it makes a huge difference. Chances the injector cleaner cleaned the fuel tank instead like you suspected. Rip em out and send them to your nearest specialist. Good investment I reckon.

MY 0.02c If you've fitted a new set of leads get the injectors serviced like Tom suggests. Amazing the difference it makes, also I'm not a fan of Bosch plugs at all, I always use NGK in any engine I work on.

Gonna do the leads and Fuel filter today.. I'll know soon enough if it worked..
I'll be selling this motor soon anyway to make way for the supercharged EL motor in my shed.. It'll sell much better if people can see how smooth it is and how much grunt it has. |
