G'day, I wonder if anyone can come up with a solution to my problem.
I recently changed the oil and replaced the serpentine belt on my EF Fairmont and was very happy with how quiet and smooth it was now running. However, I can now hear a slight hum which increases with speed and is completely inaudible below 40Kph. I did put new rotors and pads on two weeks ago but did not notice the noise until after I did the service. Other work I have done recently; Flushed and replaced coolant. Changed licence plate illumination bulb. (Pretty sure neither of these things are causing the noise) Any insight would be great. |

Ive been told this can be due to overtightening the hub nut on the spindle. I had this issue too when I turned right at speed and sometimes at straight ahead. Backed the nut off a frag and it stopped.

Good call on the bearings. This was my best guess as well. I'll try loosening the nuts on the weekend (even though it sounds counter intuitive) see if it makes any difference.

Wont have to loosen it too much of course

O.K. I tried loosening the nut by a bee's doodle and took it for a run. Still had the noise though. I didn't want to try any looser as it was little more than finger tight as it was.
I tightened it back up to what it was and went for another run. Needles to say it was no different. Could a slightly seized caliper cause this sort of humming noise? I would have thought that would be more of a squeal and would be pulling to one side. Any thoughts? |

Did you put new pads and rotors on yourself? if you did, did you use new bearings?
If you did use new bearings did you pack the bearings well with high temp bearing grease (HTPG) and used new bearing cups? If you didn't use new bearings, did you check the cups and bearings were in good condition, if they were good did you clean the bearings up well and repacked the bearings with HTPG? When you tightened up the nut, I assume you tightened the retaining nut to 30Nm while rotating the rotor, loosened the nut back half a turn and then tightened it to 5Nm or finger tight. In saying all of the above...are your tyres in good shape? might be tyre related humming. I don't think slightly seized calipers will cause any sort of humming.

Yep new bearings and lots of grease.
I did not use a torque wrench though. Will be buying one today though. Is it likely to cause any problems if I drive on it like this, assuming it is the bearings? |

Other thing youmay want to look at is link pin bushes, sway bar bush and all the other joints and bushes. It may be metal on metal that you are hearing.

Bushes are good. Just bought myself a torque wrench and will make sure everything is at correct tightness tonight. Will let you know how it goes.

If you tightened it too much, the bearings will run hotter and most likely fail quicker. If it's too loose, it will be noisy and wear out quickly as well due to non-uniform contact. Bearings should be fine as long as it hasn't been too long.

I'm in the middle of fixing the torque settings as we speak. |

FIXED
I now have a new favorite tool. The torque wrench. I seems the problem was that the initial seating of the bearings was not tight enough. I pulled it all apart, checked for any damage I might have caused, greased it all up again and torqued the nuts up to 30Nm. Backed the nuts off half a turn, torqued them back up to about 5Nm until there was no play in the rotors, locked the nuts off and tapped the caps back on. On with the wheels and time for a smoke. Fingers crossed. Took it for a run and, lo and behold. FIXED. Thanks every one for your help, this is a great site, I'm learning a lot from you guys and saving money at the same time. Thanks again. |
