i have an El ghia and it constantly hunts, have replaced injectors, ics, air filter, power steering (was going hard then soft) used carby cleaner to clean throttle body, and i think there were other things i have done forgotten,
but it only hunts in neutral or park, in drive or reverse it stays level, i think the power steering sensor is naffed as when at idle it drops the rev when i steer i thought it was ment to keep it level? other mods to keep in mind have bigger cam (wade1634?) but it hunted before the cam was in. any suggestions? might just get a new power steering sensor cant hurt. |

yes the ecu gets its inputs from numerous sensors then tells the ISC what to do, so that could be the problem
Maybe try making a new gasket to block off the ISC completely whilst leaving it plugged in, then bump up the TB screw till it idles around 850rpm when warm Theres a fine adjustment till it holds idle when cold, and doesnt idle to high when warm. Try running with the ISC blocked off and see how the car goes |

a stuffed O2 sensor will make a car hunt

o2 sensor thats what i was going to replace then i couldn't remember if it was this car or my last for that i replaced it, but have tried blocking off the icsit was a prick when it was cold then idled to high when warm
thanks might just replace the o2 and the power steering ones anyway, it doesnt do it all the time either, some days it will be fine then without me touching anything it will hunt, that's with the aircon turned off |

well had a play and the o2 sensor looks newsish so i musta replaced it, disconnected the powersteering sensor nothing changed, put the car in diagnostic mode where ya set ya base idle and timming, it idles perfect then stop the car take the pin out and start it again and it starts hunting.
BUT kinda fixed it, i screwed the idle screw in abit and the ics adjusts to suit screwed it in a bit more and it stopped hunting??? but when i go form reverse to drive it revs up to 1100 then back down to 750 800 therabouts, so just ave to wait a second when moving or do it really quick but its only temp till i work out whats wrong |

o2 sensor will not make the car hunt.
I will be trying the power steering switch first. I have had problems with them. Second will be the idle control solenoid (isc). I have had ecu faults but that's on ef's not el's. If all that fails go & see someone with a scanner to extract codes. If you don't want to see anybody look for air leaks & maybe map sensor. There's too much to list for a problem like this. GOOD LUCK.

You really hate the ISC don't you |

New idle speed controller will fix it.
If its idling and you turn the wheel the revs drop you got an ISC that can't keep up. I had a friends car that did that except it would just stall when they turned the wheel. Replaced ISC and its good as new. |

its more a trial and error thing with the isc..
there is something causing it to hunt its just the stress of finding what it is.. its just a matter of back probing every thing that gives a signal related to the isc. if everthing is ok i would be looking at a vacuum leak :ect |

yeah i have the same f**k problem and im fed up with it, but mine doesnt do it untill its running at normal temp, ive replaced the isc, o2 sensor, and i dunno what to replace now. last thing i can think of would be map sensor
??? someone shed some light???

Where is the TB screw on a log manifold?

Guys try the power steering switch i have had customers cars doing the same thing & it was the power steering switch. Please just note that i am making a suggestion from experiance.
If you have a ef & changed everything but ecu, it's possible it is the ecu. I have changed ecu on ef's for hunting. It's the idle circuit in the ecu that has the problem.

i have replaced the ics to! about a year ago never changed at all? will try the power steering switch, but when i disconnected it it still hunted, trying another ecu could be a challenge live in a small town, when the car is in diag mode for setting the timing it doesn't hunt so would that mean the idle circuit would be fine? or is it like safe mode with a computer uses a different set of instructions

you said it hunted before you changed the cam..
have you tried a new map sensor? as the map is vacuum sensitive... |
