Lifters were fine no ticking except for about 5 seconds on startup in the morning but I was due for an oil change.
I put some fresh HPR15 in her and now there is a constant tick from one of the lifters - wow that makes sense. Stupid ford.
Hope it goes away

I have the exact same thing with my EL. But I have had the same Lifter Noise since I bought it 5 years ago. I have tried the Nulon 'No lifter noise"stuff but it dosent seem to go away all the time. It went away last oil change but what I do find is that it quietens with some brands of Oils and gets worse with some otherss. I even replaced my Oil last week with HPR15 but still their. Ah well have to learn to turn up the Music louder :D

Drop the oil and try something else, we found with our old EL different oils made a difference. s**t I can't even think what oil we used. I'll have a think and will be back.

I had HPR30 in there, and went HPR15 because I thought it might be a bit better for winter. Oh well if it persists I'll go back to HPR30 :(

I've always been told engines don't like to have there oils changed around - like stick with one brand/model.

Those HPR oils are really thick arn't they? Ford recomend 15W-40, and I though HPR15 was 15W-60 and HPR30 20W-60! Why do you run such thick oil? I mean my motors got 640,000km's and she still loves the Penzoil Gas - which is a 15W-40 oil for duel fuel cars. There's about 2 seconds of ticking on start up in the early morning, onyl when i park on the street (instead of the garage) and Tasie's like Australia's coldest place!

EDIT; i got bored and went to the Penrite website and they recomend you run HPR15... Queer stuff.

I've noticed with lower weight oils the tappets may tick, I generally use a heavier weight oil and I've had no problems with it... ticks for about 1/2 second on start up then goes away...

I've come the the conclusion, big engine, large clearances, heavy weight oil. I use W30-40 I think, and change it every couple of months as I do a lot of start and stop trips every day, especially since it has over 300,000 kms on the clock and the oil seals may be worn.

But, in my experience with the EA if it ticks, its always been a broken tappet.

On ea-onwards they are not known as lifters they went out the window on the old 4.1 block. They are called lash adjusters and you can buy individual ones from and car parts shop. They are simple to replace, rocker cover off, unbolt cam rocker assembly, slip out the old lash adjuster(s) and wack in a new one, or set. Make sure you don't loose the end spacer out of the lash adjuster seat, they don't come with new ones. Tighten down the cam/rocker assembly evenly and straight, i think the torque is like 25nm for those bolts, bottomed out and a little bit extra.

To take off the cam assembly you need to take off the cam cog and chain of the front of the cam, at this stage if you want a cam upgrade, nows the time to do it. when putting her back you need to reset the cam tensioner. Rocker cover back on again.

Lash adjuster noise can also be caused by low oil pressure, low oil pressure can be cause by. low oil level, warn big end bearings, cam bearings or f**k lash adjusters.

Pretty easy.

If you want more information or help message us. my mob and email is there.

Ford and the oil companies recommend their products based on a new engine. As engines wear clearances open up. Most service manuals quote thicker oils as the vehicle gets older to help maintain oil pressure. I use a 20w-50 have never had a problem with it.

HPR15 is recommened where 15-40 to 20-50 is specified. Reason I was running thicker oil anyway is because my rings are a bit shagged and if I run too thin it uses too much oil.

I bet the lifter doing it is the 'non-genuine' repco one anyway. The rest of them are original ford ones - I accidently ran over one of my lifters with a car when doing the cam install lol - needless to say it needed replacing.
