Hey fellas,
Looks like I'll need to be changing out my sump gasket at some point soon, there is alot of oil hanging around that area of the block. I have had a look through my workshop manual and it seems to suggest that i'll need to drop the k frame right out, which means i'll have to support the motor and what not. so my question is, does anyone know any hints or tips as to get the gasket in and out but leave the k frame in. i just dont have the facilities to be able to support the motor without the frame in. cheers, nic |

What I did was supported the motor with some square tubing accross the engine bay. Just behind the strut towers there enough room for it.
I had some square tubing with some legs welded on and used some chain with a bolt to tension it to the engine lift points and made it fkn tight and then dropped the k frame out easy peasy. Also paint it ford blue while its out.. Just because

Don,t know if this is possible on ef but years ago i did one on an Ea by dropping the sump. This left me about 1-2 cms clearance between sump and block just enough to wiggle old gasket out and slide the new one in very carefully. The book said it couldn't be done but with a bit of care no probs.
Goof luck |

thanks for the help guys. still not too sure on exactly how i'm going to tackle it just yet. might scope it out at a later point in time.
i've got to put bushes in it at some point soon too, so i might drop the k frame and try and find someone with an engine crane or something similar... *shrugs* dunno |

Pull the engine out (so much easier) and while you are at it, replace the rear and front seals, and timing cover seal, 'cos you can get at them easier with the engine out.Takes about the same amount of time as it does to drop the K frame
Plus you can give the engine a real good clean, and the engine bay too!! |

I agree that the best way is to take the engine out, as you can fix all the little leaks etc while you are there. But you can do it with the engine still in the car as I have just done my EL. Is arkward to do, but is possible by supporting the engine from above or as I did by blocking up under the engine mounts after the engine is lifted. There is just enough room the thread the oem one piece gasket in there too.

i wouldnt mind pulling the motor and going over it with a fine tooth comb, its still on the original head gasket! *touches wood*. but having said that its a lot more work to pull the motor out than support it and drop the k frame out.
fuel lines, throttle cable, cruise, wiring looms are all springing to mind. and my still lack of engine crane |

Left the k frame in when I done mine. Lot less work than taking motor out, but arkward!
