I recently discovered that my sump gasket is leaking oil at a fairly chronic rate from 3 places...

So, I bought a new sump gasket kit yesterday, looks like this.





However, I have since then been told by a mate that the cork gasket like above is cr*p, and that I should get a one piece rubber one.

The search function didn't bring much up about different gasket types.

Should I go and try to get a one piece rubber one, or would I be ok to use the one I have now??

the rubber one is better, but you'll get a lot of years out of the cork one

I've got a cork one...been on for 3 years or so without issues.

Alright then, I'll use the one I have now then and see how I go.

Turns out it was actually the oil pressure sender which had died, and needed to be replaced. I had mis-diagnosed it earlier, so for $12 and a few hours fiddling around with it, I replaced it.

A while ago I wanted to change the sump gasket and following my Ellery's manual it said that the sump can be removed whilst the engine is in the car. After 2 days trying to get the sump off I gave up and came to the conclusion it is physically impossible to remove the sump whilst the engine is in the car (91 EB) - no how you try to remove engine mounts and tilt the engine. I then lifted the engine out and took the sump off whilst the engine was swinging from the crane. I too used the cork gasket with the rubber ends and I tell you it was an absolute pain to get the rubber ends to mate properly and pull the sump up evenly. I used a combination of gluing the cork to the sump with red gasket goo and then trying to lock the little tabs of the rubber ends into the cork and gluing them onto the sump as well. You then have to really carefully tighten up the sump bolts so it comes up evenly or else it will push out the rubber ends from the mating lip. Overall an absolute bugger of a job that would have been made easier had I had the one piece rubber gasket. You’re lucky it was just an oil pressure gauge! Cheers
