just got a t5 put into my el fairmont, and the gearbox is making weird and wonderful noises especially in third, its exactly like gearbox wine except its much louder, and when it is inder load it sounds like something is loose within the box itself in any gear other then 1st...
any help would be great cheers matt

Sounds like it needs rebuilding....or if no good for that....then replacing.

Yeah that's generally not a good thing, I'd make sure for certain that it's not your clutch, and I'd also check the fluid, give it a fresh fluid change, and make sure you run some LUBRIZOL additive. If that doesnt work, something needs rebuilding as has been said, although if you dont care too much about the transmission, Try some nice thick Gearbox oil or even some engine oil, but keep in mind, this is REALLY not good for the tranny and will likely do more harm than good, so I take no responsibility if you kill it, but it might quieten it down a bit, lol.

What grade of oil did you fill it with? My eb calls for transmission fluid in the manual plus the lubizol. When I recond my T5 I asked the guy what he'd run in it and tho was years ago now and I can't remember what he said, I'd ring a few gearbox specialists and get their opinions on it. Was told tho trans fluid is too thin, but go too heavy and you will either damage the box or at the least have trouble selecting gears, esp when box is cold. Sounds like you are up for a rebuild tho. Been there done that myself.

I've even heard of people using Chainsaw bar lube in really noisy transmissions with good sucsess, lol.
