You can soak them in oil and bleed them, or you can just install them as is. They will adjust and bleed themselves either way, will just be a bit noisy for a minute or so.

Just to add also, I had a lifter go off its head with no prior warning one morning when i fired up the car, which was 2 days before i was to put my new cam in, so i done the dash to work and aftawards ran around getting new lifters and shims for the new wade cam. When i picked up my cam from wade he mentioned to me that if my oil level was low that the lifters can get a bit temperamental. So i got back to my car to find that the oil level was only down a poofteenth so i thought what the heck and topped it up took the car for a drive to get my new lifters and 15 mins later, voila no noise so i was spewin i done all that running around for nuthin, but i put the cam in anyway that nite. So it may be a bit off topic but i thought worth posting for anybodies future reference as to having noisy lifters.

wath out the shims dont drop into the oil return gallerys in the head, stuff some paper towel in there first.
also if any shims fall out make sure u put them back in the right way up, 2 slots to the top, 3 to the bottom (lifter side) |

if the HLA's are noisy then buy a new set, or if your really tight, replace the lifter thats ticking with a working one

I gave my tappets a good clean with degreaser and then soaked them in oil before I put it all back together. Didn't know you had to bleed them, but either way, it was hell noisy for the first 5-10 mins or so...after that, all nice and quiet.

Go buy some HLA retainer clips from repco - theyre the rubber/plastic O ring which goes around the lifter. They hold them in the rocker arm, AND force the oil thru the lifter instead of allowing it to bypass the lifter.
They will stop the lifters ticking UNLESS its a f**k lifter. Also, pull them apart and allow them to sit in degreaser for a while. To put them back together you need to compress the lifter with your hand them slide the O ring over the end and clip it on, they wont go back together otherwise. |

I didn't think you could use the retainers with double shims, or was I just to lazy to replace them.

The retainers can jam since it can't be pushed all the way making the tappets get stuck some times and cause ticking noise. Works fine without them too, but just a bit more of a struggle to put the rockers back in unless you use tape to hold them in place.
