Hi everyone, I have a 1996 4L which has started tapping at idle, got louder after a service.

Sounds like a lifter/tappet but is there an easy fix?

Re Check oil level to confirm the right level.
What grade oil was used and what conditions the engine in?

Does the tapping go away once the car has warmed up or is it there all the time?

Should invest in some Lucas oil stabilizer, I swear by the stuff. On my old motor it stoped all tapping and bearing noises on start up, and on my new motor I started using it with full synthetic oil after 3000 ks and instantly after oil change it was extremely quiet and so smooth to free rev. It's good stuff I reckon

Running 10-60, which replaces 20-50. Oil is at the correct level and its at idel all the time.

Think will try the lucas, havent used that since I owned a Land Rover :)

I dont care whether they say 10-60 is a replacement, I would NEVER run anything other than 15w40/20w50. This could be where your problem is coming from. Too thin oil = not enough pressure = rattles.

Yes always run a 15w40, there's alot to choose from. I found penrite is a great synthetic oil to go with the stabilizer btw

15w40 is what our older i6 engines are designed to run on. I don't understand why people use anything but.

HPR15001, HPR15005, HPR15010, HPR15020, HPR15060, HPR15205
Full synthetic engine oil formulated primarily for use in "older" engines that require SAE 15W-50 or 20W-50 grades such as pre 1997 Australian family cars. HPR 15 may be used in many applications where SIN 15W-50 and SIN 10W-70 were recommended.
Key Specifications: API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B4, M2C-153E/M2C-902A3, Opel B0401013 , MB 229.1

I don't see 15w40 anywhere in the recomendations.

No but 20w-50 which is recommended by ford.
