G'day having a problem with my 98 au xr6. sometimes when i kick the old girl over the temp guage will jump straight to hot. The engine is not hot because it is only just kicked over and the block is cold to touch. I have replaced the thermostat but has not fixed the problem. I have been told it could be a dirty sesor. Any suggestions?

cheers john

First, check the gauge. Remove the wire from the temp sender, turn the key to "ON" and short the wire to earth. If the gauge goes to HOT, it's working fine. If not, you have a screwy gauge. If the gauge is OK, replace the temp sender and see what happens. There not expensive or difficult to do.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on. :D
