I have a 6cyl el fairmont ghia and ever since the head was done and the radiator reconditioned the temp has been going from M down to L on the temp guage whilst driving. the thermostat has been replaced and doesnt overheat. does anyone have any ideas on what the story is here???

my ea does the same,,the temp will suddenly go just over half then drop down again,,have been told it's harmless,,been doing it before and after doing the head gasket

it may be harmless but if u just assume its going to go down and oneday it doesnt well thats not going to be a good thing! it wasnt doing it before the head was done and sat between A and M.

On a hot day It will stay around the M and A for me, if its a REAL fkn hot day it will go up just alittle more.
It goes down for me when i start moving and air passes thro the engine, and also it will go down if i stay in the same spot for alittle while.

yeah but when its droppin just under the L from M whilst doing 100kmh wont the air fuel mix change, as if the engine is from a cold start.

On the EA, i'd almost definately say it would be the fan hub is worn and needs replacing.
I experianced this when my head went and a while after, it stopped. The only logical explanation for this i could come up was that the oil in the cooling system from the blown gasket was getting stuck on the sensor and was holding a higher temperature than the coolant raising the temperature. then when the flow of coolant pushed the oil on, the temperature went down. (thats my theory, it's prolly a load of BS) you might wanna try putting a small hole in the thermostat (bout 3-5mm) this might allow a better flow to the thermostat so it opens quicker. I certainly would not conclude that it is nothing before completely going over the cooling system for problems.

How about, when it gets to whatever your thermostat is, say 90, it opens all the way, and hence the drop in temp, sounds good to me.

Ok how come some cars temp gauges never move around so much?
With my EL falcon and EB falcon the temp is allways going up and down, if your driving on an open road or city drving the temp gauge will allways go up and down. On some cars , My old XF falcon , my mates 1992 model 5 series BMW , and another mates nissan pulsa , when the temp gets to its normal temp it remains solid and never moves up and down, even if your thrashing around or driving slow, it will allways have a steady temp showing. It seems that fords allways have very sensitive temp gauges is this true?

all i can think of is that the radiator is cooling better than before and when the thermostat opens its super cold water being pumped in, ill just have to bare with it...

I would think that it wouls also depend on the condition of the cooling system, a nice clean radiator would allow maximum flow, the thermostat opens gradually, with maximium flow the coolant would heat up evenly, and not show a great drop etc, if the thermostat was stuffed, or cores clogged, more pressure would build up, and make more of a fluctuation, on the temp gauge, some of my cars have done this, some havent, thats my guess anyway.

If ur using a genuine ford thermostat p*** it off and try a Trident one.

as i said before my temp goes up and down all the time and i have been told by ford and by a radiator specialist thats it's nothing to worry about and it's the thermostat doing it's job..
though i will need to replace the fan clutch shortly

I had this problem on my previous car , an EA and I came to the same conclusion, though mine stablised on longer trips.
