lads,

had to fit a new fan belt today, as the old one s**t itself.
problem is now it looks like the belt is rubbing on the idiler pulley brace - and it also looks like it isnt sitting on the tension pulley properly... i fitted it properly and its set up correctly as per the sticker on the under the bonnet.

does this indicate a f**k tensioner/idiler pulley?

the old fan belt is slashed and wrecked along one half (which was facing the pulley brace) but fine along the other side.

need some help with this one...

cheers all

Does the pulley have a lot of movement/play/end float in it? Or any pulley either side of it?

check the idler pulley for movement, and then look down and make sure all the pulleys line up.
start engine and make sure the harmonic balancer is not rooted, just watch it while started will have end float.

all fails can put in thin washers between the idler pulley brace and engine on the bottom two bolts, dodgy but will get you by until it is sorted incase car is needed in a hurry.

i just took the idiler pulley and tensioner off and you can see grooves cut into the pulley brace from where the belt has been rubbing on it.

im thinkin its either stuffed or out of alignment, can you adjust them?

and all the pulleys line up except for the tensioner, the belt sits about 2/3 on it.

can you pull the pulley from side to side, even a little bit?
do any of the pulleys wobble when running?

ok been thinking about this, and since i've seen this happen on many e-series including the old ef x-taxi standing in the driveway, i have a theory

over time the hinge on the idler pulley arm get worn and then because of the 'spring' and belt is pulled into the engine causing it to rub on the belt.

sound feasable or am i dreamin.

Yea i agree check the harmonic balance cos the same thing happened on my old mans car, NFII Fairlane and i thought it was the pully but when i put the new belt back on and started it, it ran and then throw the belt again (didnt stuff it though) so i had a look and i could c the balance stickin out a fair bit.
Its one to check.
Cheers
