i did the ye old alternartor test (removed terminal when car was going) car spluttered and stopped i was told this alternator needed replacing whne i just brought the thing and yeah i have down this test before on other cars ie an EA tr magna and a few older cars and they still ran.
and by this EB dieing this means the alternator is f**k. would an alternator that is putting out good charge coule this screw with the ecu or anything in or out side the car ie engine or interior wise. My instrument cluster works but the temp guage doesn't move and the odometer and the tripmetre doesn't move so would this have something do with a poor battery or alternator. oh well cheers

If you disconnected the battery while it was running you have probably fried all your electronics.

i have done this thing MANY times before and no problems or electrics were f**k. so i would dissagree with your reply a good car with a good alternator should run fine with the battery discounteced cause the alternator is flowing proper current etc etc all the alternator does is charge the battery and that I may be proved wrong but i got a feeling iam right or the very least half right.

You never ever should remove the battery terminal while engine is running. The EASIEST way to check your alternater voltage is to run a multimeter over the positive and negitive battery terminals while the engine is running

I believe the battery is supposed to read about 14-15V whilst the engine is running provided the alternator is working correctly.

i must admit i've ran cars before with no battery, old ones will run, efi ones probably won't.
if you removed the alternator positive and the car died, your battery is probably flat or stuffed.

well i have down the efi ones like i remove the ground not the positive oh well s**t happens i have down this many times before oh well been taught about cars sorta bush mechaninc style removing a terminal should hurt it cause the car is in park or neutral etc nothing else is running no radio no lights no nothing just engine running it possible a bad move but i have never hurt any cars before and i have said this many before i have down it on a 94 Magna, and EA mulitpoin, EA CPI, R31 Skyline, a Mazda 626 and an old Datsin stanza mate said he did it so what possible damage could it do? like i have said before a car with a good alternator should run with out a battery. and i mean run as in sit in a garage for a few seconds i don't mean like running it for hours on end without a battery that would be a disater the alternator would charge so much and couldn't go no where i assume thats what would happen.

yeh thats pretty much the same thing i've done, but some cars will work, others won't.

As suggested the multimeter is the tool of choice for checking the alternater. If you dont have one then get your local auto elec to check this for you. It probably wont even cost you for this quick check.

yep thats right closer to the 13.8 is ideal...some will go up round the 14.4V mark but thats still ok.
