one exhaust place in Rocky tell me that a high flow after market cat will flow better then standard.. and another exhaust place in Mackay tell me not to buy highflow cats because they flow worse then standard and if you change your exhaust keep standard cat for better preformance. who to believe?? what to buy? need a new one because old one is ratteling. i'm thinking i should just get a good one from the wreckers

Get a highflow, less restriction is better, in the end they might be trying to say, unless you make a heap of power it wont cause any loss as standard ones can flow quite a bit of pwer in the first place.

Dont just go by the flange size of the cat, look at the surface area of the honeycomb
Alot of these 5" flanged 'stick your head in' highflow cats have a very slim body, and thus are restrictive, as opposed to a factory EF-AU cat which has a VERY broad body, and can easily be reflanged to suit your 2.5-3" system.

Yeah mate i agree grab a original falcon one, as long as its in good condition. The high flow ones smell shocking. Unless you get a real good one. Its up to you mate but i would go the standard one.

if the factory one is in good condition - which they usually arn't after 100,000km's as thats about when they start to break down - then keep it and modify the flanges to fit.
if you need a replacement, get a hi flow - they are cheaper than a genuine Ford replacement, and flow better than normal universal cat converter replacements. |

They 'burn in' after a while, and the smell disappears. Agree with twr7cx on this one. No use reflanging your original if it's f**k. But saying that, the factory ford cats do flow well, alot of factory cats do. With most modern cars, as long as the flange and cat size matches the rest of the system, they aren't that much of a restriction.

mite have to get a ford cat then the only reason i need a new one is because the old one has fallen apart inside honeycomb part is loose and rattely and i dont want it to block up the exhaust.
its funny how 2 different exhaust mobs have 2 different opinions about stock and standard cats. thanks for the replys.

empty cats flow the best. I was amazed last time in brissy there were a few shops that will hollow out your cat for $80 and this was advertised on there shop window. where is the EPA??????????????? Alot of jap turbo cars get it done because the dump pipe from the turbo gets a little blocked ramming into a cat honeycomb.
Cheers.... |

I don't think theres any difference between cats across the range. Was standard AFAIK... And I don't know about half the price. You can get 2.5" inlet-outlet 'hiflow' cats for 150 or less. If ford spare parts match that, I'd be stunned.

I priced an au cat yesterday in my local Ford dealership and had a good old laugh WITH the guy on the other side of the counter when he read out the price.....$490 . He told me to go elsewhere, unless i was an idiot. I'd definitely go aftermarket, even if it didn't flow as good as a factory cat at that price.
