hi all,
i used el thermos and the davies craig wiriing kit, my kit didnt have any relays or looms with it (i think i got the wrong one) anyway i still went ahead with it and followed digram 5 - (twin fan, thermatic single fan condenser). i followed the diagram strictly, i tapped into the a/c compressor wire on the side of the engine loom (after the plug) and sourced ignition power from a wire near the compressor wire, not sure what it is although it def is only accessory (as per test light), and constant power is from the battery. My problem is that when i turn the accessories on both fans come on, and they always stay on all the time after i turn the car on. My understanding of running the 3 relay system is that one fan stays on always, and the 2nd fan cuts in when i reach a certain temperature and/or the a/c is turned on. this doesnt seem to be happening. i just want to make sure that the above is correct because if it is then obviously i got something wrong (so sure i didnt but obviously i must have) and did anyone have a leak from the top radiator hose after putting in the capillary in it? mine trickles so tomorrow im going to put some silicon around it and get a new clamp as i currently have the crap type of clamp. anyway any help or info would be great. thanks guys (btw these fans are awesome, no more whining noises from the stupid clutch fan!) Cheers, Moe.

i have a eb fairmont i have done the el thermo fan convertion.
what i did was have a wire running from the battery to a fuse which then ran to a relay which was wired up to a thermatic switch in the radiator hose, then that was hooked up to both fans. they dont come on till it its the first line on the normal range but i can adjust this via a switch to be higher. (for winter) |

yeAh I've used the switch but when I turn it clock wise or anti clock wise the fans stay running makes no difference

yea thats not good mine is atm set to minimum temp and when i turn the dial it lets the temp rise a bit and then kicks the fans in. Maybe u wired it up wrong?

if you turn the switch and nothing happens then you have a faulty switch. providing you wired it up correct. unplug one of the wires to the switch and see what happens, if the fans turn off id say a faulty switch, return it and get a replacement under warranty.
i bought mine second hand from dansedgli and it worked great for over 12 months then it s**t itself and done what yours done, no adjustment, however it still turned off when it cooled enough. now i have the hooked up to constant but will be running off the ECU when i can be stuffed doing it. sor my wagon it will be constant |

So I was right in the way I said it should work?? I have worked out that there must be constant power going somewhere as the battery is dead now. I think I must have done something wrong with the wiring. It's wired though when the ACC are off the fans are off too. I'm guessing one of the relays is wired up wrong hence also explaining the fans both being on. Anyway mite check it out in the new I'm happy for the car to sit there and rest for a few weeks as I don't need it. I'll let you know how I go.

if you have hooked up the constant to the switched part of the relay then it will be making constant contact. just to make sure you have them correct this is the way it should be
ignore switch. where the 'load' wire is woud be where your thermo switch is, where the lights are is where your fan would be. |

Can't view that image through my phone huggiebear. From memory the relay switch constant was 30. What I did was run one wire from the battery to one relay, and then looped that to the 2nd relay and then again to the third. To me this has the same logic as running 3 separate wires from the the battery. Am I right in saying this or gave I seriously stuffed up??

yeah you got that bit ok.
pin: 30 = 12v constant 87 = to fan 86 = input from sitch 85 = earth |

What about the other 2 relays??
Cheers mate

so with the 2 relays there is
both 30, 86 and 85 are identical but 87's run to different fans, on the 3rd relay 86 will come from aircon wire and pin 30 will tap in with only 1 of the other pin 30 relays that way when the aircon is turned on only 1 fan comes on constant, but if the temp jumps too hot the other will kick in, but with aircon off, once the temp rises both fans will switch on at the same time.. the only way to get the 2 fans to come on at different temps will be to run off an EL ECU or run 2 temp switches. |

Okay so pin 30 on the third relay going to air con switch should have it's own power from battery and not looped from the other two pin 30 relays?
Mate your a champion thanks heaps for your assistance here.

they can all share the same power wire, providing you have an appropriate fuse on the circuit. if you split the wire about 30cm BEFORE the relays it will give you enough room to add 3x 30 amp fuses, 1 to each relay so you dont fry your fans or melt wiring.
so you will split the 1 power wire (atleast 8g IMO) into 3 wires which will then go... ---fuse ---- relay 1 - fan 1 ---fuse ---- relay 2 - fan 2 ---fuse ---- relay 3 - fan 2 hope that clears a bit more up for you. its better to run 3 separate fuses over 1 bigger fuse. |

do you have to use a craige davies switch if you use the el ecu

no, if you use the ECU you can run the ECU wires into the 2 relays. i believe that the ECU controls the fans for the aircon setup aswell so you only need 2 relays, grab a test light, feed the wire through the engine bay and test with a test light, it should be fine to earth straight to the body as thats what happens with a relay setup... sigh when you think about all the wasted power the ECU uses lol
