Hello, all. I've got an issue with-in my el, the thermos dont appear to be kicking in on the high speed, yet, if i pull off the temp sender connector, they roar, (so the circuit is operational).
I've replaced the thermostat, the temp sender, the 3 relays behind l/h h/light, power module(computer), radiator(22,000klm ago), had the motor and radiator flushed, and yet still wants to get hot.

:!: HELP! ANYONE GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS? :shock: :?: :!:

ecu triggers them, so possibly the ecu is f**k.

thats wat i thought- looks like i've got 2 shagged ecu's, then?

the one i put in was a new one...

at what temp should the high speed circuit kick in?

Not sure about this but is there a fuse for the positive side of the relay control or the fan power feeds, if either is blown it will stop the fans from operating.

You will find the ECU switches the negative to the relays to make them operate, I think about 75 degrees C RHS one switches on.

He said if he pulls the coolant sensor they kick in so it's not fuses / relays.

Maybe it's the sensor itself just needs a clean

Shouldnt be the sensor- its new...

When are they supposed to kick in? I thought 95 deg. It reached 101 deg the other day(between O and R), and still no high speed- just low idle speed.
they start to run at idle speed at 80 deg( just below L). :shock:

I know the exact temperature from having the odo in cluster diagnostics, on screen 2 (temperature) 8-)

Do an ECU diagnostic and see what codes come up(write them down), there are codes for the fans and the relays (only 2 of the 3). Clear the codes and do the tests detailed at the end of http://www.fordmods.com/forums/documents.php?doc=54 .
It may only be the need to reset the ECU codes.

If you get recurring fault codes for any of the relays, fans, etc, and you know for certain they are okay (have you actually checked that both fans are roaring with the temp sender plug off ??), it may give you some ideas which other areas you can check.

low speed kicks in at 80*c
Mid speed Kicks in at 105-107*c

dont ask my why you would have the fans kick in when the car is already prety hot?

i thaugt something was shagged in mine too but as i watched it get to around 104*c and fans not clicking into second speed.
then i wired up some resistors and pluged them into the tem sensor input which represented 107*c and the fans kicked in at mid speeed.



Mode1: Motor 1- 1400rpm Motor 2- 1400rpm

Mode2: Motor 1- 2300rpm Motor 2- 1900rpm

Mode3: Motor 1- 2300rpm Motor 2 - 2300rpm

mode no 1 runs boath fans in series.


put your car in the diagnostic mode to read temrature then plug in a series of resistors into your temp sensor connection use around 1.8 -1.9kohm

'Optimal' running temp is about 95 degrees IIRC. You want the engine to get up to this temperature as fast as possible. Looks to me like the temperatures you posted would do that nicely.

thats what i found ford has this set at. personally if i was designing the car i would have lowerd second speed of the fans, to kick in below 104*C which is boiling point for ford coolant.

You sure about that? Is that in a pressurised system or open air?

Edit - yeah, just looked it up. 50/50 coolant mix with have a open air BP of around 106 degrees which will be raised to about 160 degrees in a pressurized cooling system.

boiling point is raised if it's in a pressurised system.
you'll notice if you open the cap when at operating temp (accidently done by myself), the coolant will come out boiling, as it's not under pressure.
