Hey,
So far so good, but am about the replace the thermostat and housing - and I have 2 gaskets. The one that came with the housing is obvious, its for between the top and bottom housings, however I've also got a simple rubber o-ring, that fits in the recess where the thermostat itself sits. Question is, does this rubber o-ring go in first and the thermostat on top of it, or thermostat in first and rubber o ring on top. Um, I'm waiting for someone knowledgable so I can put it all back together.... Thanks! |

Around the thermostat?
The thermostat sits in the recess. The rubber o ring either goes above it between it and the top housing, or below it, in the recess BEFORE you put the thermostat in? |

Nope. It goes around it. Around the lip of the thermostat.

The o-ring has a slot in the inside.

Thanks.
Leaked so I replaced it with the paper gasket that came with the housing top, and its now dry as a bone. |

Now THATS making sense. I just checked and you're right (of course). Its not exactly bloody obvious (especially by torch light!!!). Had I slotted the thermostat in the slot in the o-ring, I think it would have been alright, but since it wasn't obvious I had it sandwiched between the top of the thermostat and the top housing, which is why it f*cked up. Now the paper type gasket is in (and its DRY!) I'll leave it, but if it starts leaking I'll put the o-ring in properly. I'll re-do it in a few months anyway as it was BAD and FILTHY (seems the previous owner doesn't know the meaning of 'maintenance'), and I also need to replace the bottom hose as I couldn't get one today, so I'll make a decision then whether I change the gasket back to the o-ring. I just needed to do something fairly quickly as the moron had straight water in it. Thanks heaps mate. |

You actually need both : The paper gasket and the O-Ring.
Theory used to be you dont (just use the o-ring), however my last 2 cars have leaked without the paper gasket. Have to go get one tomorrow. Grrr Just did a thermostat myself 4 weeks ago cause climate control wasnt working |

Oh, well since its not leaking so far without the rubber o-ring, will I bother adding it.....if its not leaking, its not leaking.....
Not sure why it would need both - given the rubber o-ring seals between the thermostat and the top housing, and the paper gasket seals instead between top and bottom housing. Now, it wasn't leaking before I did it, strangely enough with NO gaskets...... |

The o-ring around the thermostat is designed to stop the water seeping around the replaceable thermostat until it needs to open... you need this. You also need the gaskets and a liberal dose of aviation cement or at the very least some blue silicon sealer. |
