Ok while cleaning up the block deck I noticed a weird patch as I was sanding off the old gasket..
on closer inspection it looked like a blocked water gallery.. however it seems to be blocked with metal of some sort.. but not the same as the block because it sanded differently.. you can see the same sort of blockage around the oil passage. Looks factory, it's right by number one if anyone can confirm that its supposed to be like that. |

Could be blocked intentionally to control coolant flow through the block.

This is from my EA, I don't think any of mine were blocked.

Well yeh, looks like it might have been a factory thing, could be for incase a water gallery becomes too corroded, and you can then remove the metal and have a brand new one.

looks like a casting fault, not enough melton metal to fill up the cast. so they just weld it up & hope it'll last beyond the warranty period.
Or it could be a trial & error block they batched up & dump it in the production line to make the daily quoter. just an Not to sure but didn't the EA used the same short block from the previous falcon {XF}?

weird? yeah the gasket does have a hole there. Surely someone must know for sure if all the blocks are like that?
should I punch it out do you think? notice that the oil passage is also made smaller with the same metal. |

From memory there is a hole in the head above it. I think its just closed up to redirect the water elsewhere for more even cooling.
All the blocks from ea-bf have it.

I've had a look at a few different shop manuals, and what's been said is correct, so nothing to be too worried about.
I'd be a bit concerned with the area you've marked with the left hand red arrow - looks like its pretty close to the head gasket 'fire ring' area. Might be wise to take a copy of the pic on floppy disc to an engine reco place and get their opinion on it. Otherwise someone on here may have some comments on it. You may have the best head gasket available, but if the block/head sealing finish isn't up to scratch, your problems may return in a relatively short time, so it's wise to fix the 'cause' while you have the opportunity. That area may have been a cause of your leakage into no 1 cylinder (under the fire ring)in your other thread.

I'm sure u can get a decent short block there in NZ if in doubt, or get it resurfaced then reestablish the water passage to match gasket & head as mention by snap0964.

but thats the factory hole.. the water gallery IS close to the fire ring.. if anything mine is further apart as it's been filled in somehow.
I dunno.. it's been good for the last 300,000kms so I can't see why it can't do it again. oh and I'm pretty sure the cause of the gasket faliure was A: very poorly maintained cooling system.. all totally rusty s**t water + B: LPG being a bit hotter + C: me putting in the boot at 180kmph = blown crappy E series headgasket. |
