Just a general question on doing the throttle position calibration. The book says to warm the engine up, then put in drive for +1 min.Turn the engine off but leaving the ignition on (how the f**k do you do that, one turn back and one turn forward???).Push a accelerator to floor for +1 min.Return to park and turn ignition off.How does all that sound.

pretty well correct, but run engine to running temp, idle in drive with a/c off for 1+min then turn key off 1 step hold throttle down to floor for another 1+min, drive and gear change should be smooth.

I'll give this ago later on in the week with the Fairlane to make sure it's ok as I replaced mine as it was faulty.

when ever the battery is disconnected the calibration should be done. the calibration makes the gear changing smoother and at the right time. it basically tells the transmission where the throttle is positioned. this makes the transmission change at the right rev range thus smoother gear changing.

I'm assuming this is only for the 4 speed auto's as the 3 speeds don't have the computer for the gear box.

:?:

I think I might have to give this a go in my EL, it's really reaming itself into gear lately. Whiplash is not your friend!

Thanks for clarifying exactly how to do it right! :D

I assume this would only be for the EEC V as used in EF onwards & not the EEC IV as used in the EA III - ED's with electronic auto's.

I have never seen this mentioned in either the Gregory's or Max Ellery repair manuals on the EB-ED Falcons.

You had to tell me that, huh, comhelp...

I might get that S5 replaced then... At least the trans mech will know what to do, rather than me stuffing it harder!

ok from the xxxx manual models 1994-98 6cyl engines.

1/ Any time the battery is disconnected the transmission must re-learn the closed and wide-open throttle positions to enable the PCM to determine the proper gear to select for the appropriate throttle position. if the throttle calibration is not performed following power source interuption , the transmission will shift hard and perform poorly.

CALIBRATION
2/ Drive the vehicle until the engine is at normal operating temperature.
3/ Make sure the idle speed correct (approx 750 RPM)
4/ Set the closed throttle reference position by placing the transmission in "D", air conditioning off, and let the engine idle for 1min minimum.
5/ Next, set the wide-open throttle reference position by turning the engine off but leave the ignition switch ON (acc) then press the accelerator pedal to the floor and hold for 1min minimum.
6/ Place the gear selector in Park and switch off ignition. Drive the vehicle and check for proper shifting operation.

Another thing to check if gear changing is poor/irratic or in limp mode (3rd gear) is the gear position sensor ( large white assembly with 2 plugs on side of transmission), also the throttle position switch (on throttle body) if all is ok have a transmission centre do a diagnostic.
