We are all familiar of the Tick Tick Tick of the old flogged out EA sitting next to us at the traffic lights and most of us should know thats due to the hydrolic lashers but how many of us know what its all about? I have a few questions, what do the lashers do??? i know they are attached to the rocker arm inbetween the cam lobes and the valves. so i guess they press down on the valves, but whats with the hydraulic bit why does something that seems fairly simple have to be so complex? I read an other artical that in other cars there are faults with the oil pump that allows air into the lashers and stops them from working correctly i can't really see how that can be the case because as far as i am aware the lashers don't seem to be submerged in oil in the E series. as you can see i am a little confused, can a faulty lasher cause much of a decrease in performance and economy? thanks for your time

i guess they are hydrolic, so they can adjust on the angels when moving as the bottom peice will move around as the valve goes up and down the angle it presses down onchanges. the HYLA's do definately take oil in them though.

Right, because the tangent to the lobes will be at diffrent angles and the lasher adjusts the diffrent angles into the one angle for the vavle, am i right there? whats a HYLA?

it is the lifters that tick... the lifters are inside the rocker arm and push down on the valve top
it is usually the seal around the lifters that has gone and does not allow the lifter to hold pressure. removing the lifters/lash adjuster is simple and replacing the seals is easy and i think it is liek $10 for the 12 seals

yeah it sounds like you've got what i was trying to say lol HYLA - hydrolic lash adjuster. |

neato, if we can get more information on this; i'd like to submit it to the technical doccos hall of fame because there is such little information avaliable on them and my repair and maintainance manual has minimal information. when i get round to testing and replacing i'm going to create a fully illustrated report so that others can find this info nice n easy. thanks for your responses by the way this has helped my perception of them a great deal. However i'm still a little unsure of the other effects of a wasted lasher other than tick tick tick

Should give you an idea how they work... of course, for the I6 - ignore the pushrod...

so the inline six does'nt have an adjustable rocker arm so that to make sure the lasher has the correct preload they are shimmed into place. oh wow, this is making so much sence now. are the shims just like little washers that go on the underside of the lasher?

wow you guys are great. do you know the best method for shimming the inline sixes? the rocker presses straight onto the lasher? is it simply a case or marking how much travel they have then if its not right adding shims to make up the diffrence?

the shims go up into the rocker arm int eh same hole that the HYLA goes into. from factory they have one shim, with a wade regrind they require two factory shims.

each rocker arm has 1 shim in from factory, the ford shims are a precise measurement so the shim size doesnt change. when putting a reground cam in you generally use 2 shims to make up for the amount shaved off the cam.

hey rough ideas if i may but i have a slowish tick comming from the bottom left(passenger) side of the motor i have used a screwdriver to locate the sound and its not lifters, pulleys, wat pump it has new harmonic ballencer on it and tim chain was done less than 6 months ago.
oil pressure looks bit low starts off fine and drops a bit after say 30kms of driving and holds steady(well looks to be) what are peoples thoughts on what could be wrong? cheers for the help.
