ok guys, i have had so much good advice, maybe too much because now i cant decide wether to get an alted stage 3 cam or a wade cam....
i want something that can run on the stock ecu but i dont care about a lumpy idle but why would i need a stall converter for these types of cams?? ive herd id have to have one! if anyone can suggest another cam or tell me some advice then it would be really helpful, ill be getting the cam round tax return coz then ill have some money saved and some more from the return to play with |

You may find a Alted stage 3 cam is only suitable for manuals and if used on an auto without a Hi stall converter it will cause your auto trans to go into limp mode, talk to Jaysen to confirm this.
If you put in a JMM cam you can get away with using an XR6 auto Ecu with the correct diff ratio. Most other cams will require a chip or aftermarket computer, except the small power improvement cams like wade 1604, a 1636 will run but may cause the engine to hunt. Same story for Crow cams. When you fit a cam for more power you will also need to improve air intake also.

have trouble idleing smoothly. it'll basically keep speedign up and down trying to find a happy medium - which it doesn't.

so a stage 2 would meet my needs more? Ive had the heads shaved when i bought my car as part of a rebuild - almost reconditioned... will that affect my decision?

I'd be looking at a stage 2 alted. These are auto friendly.
You ask why you'd need a hi-stall with a big cam, its because you lose low down power. In the words of the dyno operator last week "Its very doughy down low" This would really suck with an auto because you have to go through the doughy low revs to get to the fun bit.. ie make your car slower over all. With a manual you can drop the clutch up high, or ride the clutch to keep the engine in the high power, and get the car off the line in a hurry. Same goes with a hi-stall, your car will launch at 2500-3000 rpm.. where the power is, not the douhy lower revs that are created with big cams. Cams aren't miricle workers, there is sacrifice. With the big high end cams (ie stage 3s) you sacrifice some low end power and torque to make more in the high end.

Same story for Crow cams. i got a 1636 cam and very happy with its power increase but you write it as if the 1636 cam is not as good comapred to the alted cams?. anyway the 1636 cam runs fine on my el ghia had to turn the idle screw a little (50 - 100 rpm) to get a idle that wasnt hunting. |

i was in your situation.. didnt know what to get.. but with alot of research and asking questions.. its come to the Alted Stage 2 Cam. Will run on auto and only needs crane springs and idle is good.

lol probably not, i still want my car to be an everyday driver while still being a respectable e series falcon. im guessing that i wont need the stall converter if i have a stage 2 am i right or wrong? and will a new lsd diff help with a stage 2 cam?

I've gto whats the AU version of the stage 3 on an auto, its daily driveable no worries. Certainly does suffer 'doughy bottom end syndrome' but we know how to fix that.

Stage 3 AU is inbetween stage 2 and 3 in the E series.
Stage 2 is what you want. Data_mines car is a hybrid.. With an auto with not hi stall.. don't look at the stage 3, it will dissapoint. It has nothing down low to get you off the line. Taking off like a grandpa, i need 1800rpm or so otherwise it bogs down and stalls Or i really have to slip the clutch.
