curious to know, will my ef 6cyl survive a broken timing belt if it breaks, or will it also break/damage anything else, piston/valve, if it lets go?

i had a telstar a few years ago, timing belt broke at 100kph with no other damage done, hopefully the falcons the same

They have a chain and should be replaced when noisy..If they break you could loose your whole engine...
Belts should be replaced at 100.000 lmrs..
I guess chain can go further depends on service history and abuse / driving style...

thanks for that, never heard of a chain letting go, should have looked in the manual i suppose, i just thought bels are so common these days it'd be a belt

Belts are common on free revving engines.
because the falcons are not ie: the valves drop lower than the maximum height of the piston, they use a chain for better reliability.
as a rule of thumb, if you blow a head gasket, replace the timing chain while your at it. The results of valve and piston colliding at 2000rpm are catistrophic!!!

I've snapped 3 valve springs, but never done a timing chain.

Only 1 of the snapped springs caused damage. All depends where the spring breaks.

My brother had a Laser with some wizz bang turbo motor in it. He snapped a belt doing a burnout, at approx 5500 rpm and the only thing needing replacement was the belt. As a mechanic I thought it impossible but was I wrong.

i would get it replaced before it lets go, something went wrong in the timing system in mums EA, it snapped 1 rocker arm clean off, and stuffed the rest bigtime, the lazer probably lived because the valves couldnt hit the pistons when the belt went, my ED has developed a noisy chain so im gonna start looking at getting it fixed (f**k its a big job, radiator+aircon condenser + all pulleys+ belts ahve to come off)

it really depends on the car.. some cars bend valves every time, others never do, and some depends on theyre mood

Say what!!!

You don't need to remove the condensor. Remove the radiator and you will have more than enough room, to remove the harmonic balancer, belts, timing cover etc.

If you want some pics, I understand EFFalcon had some horrific photos of what happens when piston meets valve.

*ughhh* makes me cringe just thinking about all those broken bits of metal.
