Has anyone got photos of the timing case on an ef fairmont.
And also how to take it off???? Just done head, timings f**k (my fault, lost cam gear position) and won't start, beleive its hitting valves....

To take the timing cover off, it is actualy easier to take the engine out of the car to do, as you need to drop/remove the sump. And, while the sump is off, why not replace the sump gasket, clean it out etc., replace the harmonic balancer seal etc. etc.

Mate if it has hit the valves then you'll be pulling the head off again, it's easier to do the timing cover with head off anyway lol.

Oh yeah, forgot about that bit!!
 , O.k., leave the engine in and pull the head off instead. More easier.

You only have to take your rocker cover off to re-do your timing man.
That is unless you have bent some valves lol! |

Take the rocker cover off and set the timing, if she has no compression then it's time to start over.

how do u fit the bottom chain guide without removing the sump?

ok guys, well, just took the timing cover off (5 mins ago), so i dont know how you guys can say to take the head off again, or even take sump or engine out....obvisouly you do things the hard way. Anyways, since doing the head, the car hasnt been started, because it wouldnt.
When i done the head, i took the cam gear out, causing it lose the top end timing. So im about to set it all up in place, but won't be able to put timing cover back on, as i dont have the gasket just yet. And also, gotta do the water pump. So yes, all travelling good....so far....been a good learnin curve.

looking from the front of the engine. at the very bottom right hand corner there is(or was) a chain guide of about 80mm long. it slips onto two locating lugs on the cover and it goes across the corner of the sump pan. looking at the engine with the cover off it supports the length of chain between the distributor drive pulley and the crank. if u slide the timing cover off without lowering the sump the guide will drop into the sump.

When you put it back together you might find why most people drop the front of the sump

You can tell I'm new to this...something in my timing case may be causing some rattling and I wouldn't mind finding out myself and how to remove it...so far all I know is to remove rocker cover...the things under neath that...then the head....change the gasket while I'm at it then you can remove the timing case while it's off?...I'd want to try myself since I really have no money to go to the mechanics...and I want to learn how to do it. sorry to steal the topic a bit

To be honest, a bit complicated for a first timer, have to start small and work your way up man.
If you're not very mechanically minded (which a lot of people aren't no matter how much you show them) then don't attempt it without someone there who knows what they're doing. |

Thanks Paul...I shall keep that in mind before I break my car...cheers. Might take up an auto mechanic apprenticeship...if i feel like it. phong =P~
