I was wondering if anyone (I am sure there is) has replaced the seal on the Timing Chain cover..
The book(workshop manual page 38) says just remove the crankshaft balancer then replace the old seal with a new one then put the crankshaft balancer back on but I thought you had to drop the sump and more... Could someone please confirm this? Many thanks in advance.. |

if you have trouble with the balancer and strip the thread in the crank with the puller, it can be a bigger job than you think.

I have done this seal, and yes you can do it without removing the timing case. If you are replacing the seal, get a new balancer too, as it will be grooved and will leak immediately. Good luck.

^^^ yep good advice there, a nuline balancer can be had for 110
i tried using my 12 year balancer with a new seal and it still leaked, but the new balancer was a drama on its own and didnt want to go on without stripping the crank thread, although couldve been averted if the original mechanic used a longer bolt for the puller |

Luckily was able to be retapped and puller was able to get enough grip to fit the new balancer, but i dont wanna be testing it out again in the near future.
If the thread is beyond repair sometimes a new crankshaft is needed so just take care when using the puller, and try get one that has a bolt long enough to use all of the thread. If your fitting a new one, i personally would get someone else to deal with it as sometimes they can be a royal pain going on, and labour wont be more than an hour's worth anyway |
