yes, im an idiot, broke passenger side timing chain guide about level with the head/block interface.

mechanic says 1k job with the engine out.

I searched on here and from what i understand they break easy and a lot of people just run their cars regardless of the break. is this worth the risk as i can't really afford to be hit with another grand. i know she'll run loudly without the guide, but if that most likely is going to be my biggest issue i'll be right. any other advice? i want to drive this car 1500 k's in the next seven days so its kinda urgent.

which guide did you snap, normally you snap the passengerside one which seems common, a lot of people will run fine but its only really as if there is a crack in the guide in that case.

if you have broken one off you will realy need to replace it, engine doesnt need to come out for the job can be done with taking the fans and radiator out, prob eba a prick of a job 1k sounds a little bit on the expensive side. if you were goin to do it you would be better off getting all new guides and a chain as well

i presume you broke the one that is held in by the bolt through the front of the head. seems common that these ones break, dunno how it'd run without it, would think it's there for a reason...

hers a pic now im assuming its the right hand guide that broken on this pic, i definately wouldnt run it without the guide

yeah its the passenger side one, it snapped as i was taking the head off, its still held in by the timing case so its not going anywhere, its just a matter of does it still need to be attached at the top? i read a few other threads and i thought it was common for these to snap around that point.

well put it all back together today, cranked her over and she runs fine but below 2000 revs she sounds like a tractor as the chain rattles around. i don'tsee nay way how the teeth could jump so should she be righ to run until i can replace the guide?

I broke the top half of that one in my EA. I never had a problem with it being missing.

if you are going to be driving it around without the guide, you should have no issues if you use some commonsense i.e. don't rev it too much, don't put it under excessive load etc, until you can fix it.
