the guides often brake, on the right hand side of the motor, there is one that goes from the botton to the top of the head. .. if its that one, then its not a HUGE issue to worry about ... if other ones are broken .. then maybe replace them ..
Big job though ... have your tried just to tighten the guide? ... |

just got around to fixing my xr6 on the weekend. took the rocker cover off and found that the drivers side guide had snapped at about where the tensioner presses against. so out came the motor to fix the guides. got it all done in a weekend and now she's sweet. its good to have her back again.

they are a mongrel of a job to replace guides. When ut ake the timing cover off the bottom one often drops into the sump. I have broken the passenger side guide taking a head off one once, never again will i lift from the side of the head.
Also......is there any kits you can buy that are a stronger replacement to the old plastic ones (are they actually plastic???)

I got some custom alloy ones made up in my motor ... for the passenger side of my motor .... Getting good at replacing standard ones now ... can do it in about 2hrs without pulling the motor out,... |

Does anyone has had their timing chain and/or chain guides replaced by a mechanic lately? I was just wondering how much it normally cost me to have it replaced. And how long it would normally take? I'm not confident enought in doing it myself so I plan to have it done by a mechanic. My ride is an EF fairmont.
Thanks in advance for the info guys. |

I snapped the right hand side timing chain guide on my old EA. after it was running again, I drove it for a while, booted it, and then when I sold it, the guy drove it all the way from melbourne to mildura non-stop and it was fine, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks for that piece of mind. Actually I have been driving my EF for months now with this rattling noise coming from the chain. Its really not nice to hear, I've had enough. My elderly lady neighbor who knows nothing about cars even commented that my car "sounds sick".

In my EL rebuild I bought new guides, chains, pulleys and gaskets for around $150.00 and easy to fit.
