I just noticed my chain rattles at approx. 2300-2500 rpm but goes away with less & more revs.
I can't notice it inside cabin. I came accross this noise when i put my new custom radiator & reved my engine from the engine bay. This might have been there for a long time, i don't know. I have had the head shaved for more comp. & using the AU headgasket but i don't know if the rattle was there at the time. I'm asking if anyone has had this problem & what could it be ?

HI, i have the same problem with my ef xr6, has been like it for a while now, a few months or so and i havent had any dramas yet, just havent had a chance to have a look yet! I was thinking maybey the tensioner or guids as already mentioned!

They told me that they shaved the head as much as they could on the safe side but on the border line of chain rattle. I have changed alot of cams in my time & 3 in mine. I always take the proper precaurtions. Mybe it's the 977b agressive power on at thos rpm. I don't know, i must inspect thos guids. I have used all brand new parts like genuine timing chain tensioner (Ford), new rollmaster adjustable chain gear, new lifters ect. NO SHORT CUTS.

i'm fairly sure if you took enough off the head to make the chain slack enough to make the tensioner obsolete you would've gone way passed the safe marks cast onto the head. i'm pretty sure thats what they're there for, that and to stop pistons love tapping valves because thats bad.
those plastic chain guides are a throw away item everytime you open your engine in my opinion, particularly the first time you open up a second hand engine. they go hard n brittle in no time. that and changing a whole set is so much fun

I agree. I'm just going to wait till it gets worse because if i have to change my guids i will rebuild my engine to suit a turbo set up.

fair enough but if it gets enough slap up to make contact between moving parts that wren't meant to be together then be prepapred to double your rebuild bill.

I know. Just to let you know the noise is very very low. You can just hear it in the engine bay. In the cabin you basicly cannot hear it. I think it's not that bad. But i will inspect soon. Just the perfectionest i am.
