What do I have to wach out for to do this job?
How far do I have to drop the sump, if at all? I have a manual "ellery" but the information on timing marks is just not there! Thanks in advance guys |

this is a diagram of how the marks should be aligned,,and yes it is advisable to lower the sump,,and watch out for the little guide that sits at the bottom,,it can fall into the sump..

Hey naughtyfalcon
Thanks heaps for that! Wish my "max ellerys" manual had a diagram like that! Think I'll have to get a "Gregorys" PS. I can't find the regulator valve! Bet thats why the gasket was leaking! Or maybe I dropped the thing Thanks guys! |

Thanks again! Gonna Pull the motor out of this one and do all the seals and gaskets! Will be kept as a spare motor and transmission and any thing else I can salvage! |

Righto - didn't want to start another thread...
I'm getting a reasonably loud chain-like rattle sound coming from the engine bay whenever the car is coasting ie. Not under load, but not decelerating either. Haven't yet taken cover off to check tension, but suspecting this is timing chain related, as it seems to be the only thing that would give sounds similar to gear back lash but under the bonnet. If anyone has a sugestion as to what else this is likely to be, i'm open to suggestions, but I'm going to replace the timing chain as a precautionary measure. My main question is, has anybody replaced their chain without dropping the sump, removing the timing cover etc, and instead by cutting a link in the chain, joining it to the old chain, and feeding it though over the top sprocket? Can you buy a chain like this that has a joiner, or do you have to buy a stock chain, and get a link specially made up?
