Put together my AU Ticky motor last night on the stand and noticed that there was a bit of slack on the timing chain. Heads had 20thou shaved off, so I'm assuming this would be why? Just want to check I havent managed to C**k something up.

I set the tensioner twice, same result, and yeh you can see the tension on the chain as you do it but it isnt tight. :?

Have you rotated the engine by hand? I found the slack is taken up once the tensioner is gets a chance to work. It's best done with the spark plugs out and using a rachet & socket on the harmonic balancer. This also confirms if the tensioner is working properly before you fire up the engine.

+1
You should always rotate your engine two revolutions when you reasemble to make sure nothing inside touches and the timing marks line up again, and then do it again for good measure.
Chain should be reset at TDC on compresion stroke.

you can rotate the engine anti clockwise a inch or so, this will take the slack from the outer side of the chain and will put the slack on the tensioner side, then the tensioner should release as much as allowable, then turn the engine clockwise a few full turns,
otherwise once the engine starts up and gets oil pressure it will push the tensioner the rest of the way...

If the cam timing is not correct, it is possable to puch valve through a piston. DO NOT start the engine until you can freely turn the engine two full turns and you are happy with the tensioner.

What are you worrying about? A standard valve will bend way too easily. After a while the head of the valve will fall off, and get munched up a bit, but nothing is too hard to fix. :D
If everyone keeps giving out good advice, how are we going to see smashed up engine parts on these forums, to have a good giggles at? 8-)

Motor was rotated when I put it all together, nothing hits.
Its not the first motor I've done, everything was done how it should be when put back together, but its the first one I've spent a bit of coin getting headwork done, perhaps I'm just being a bit paranoid :|

Better to sort out the minor things than having something go 'bang' later. When I put my engine together, I wasn't confident the tensioner was engaged the first time and ended up redoing it a few times.

Not everyone does this, but did you install a new timing chain set?

i guess if your sure the bottom guide hasnt dropped into the sump, then youve done all you can and it should be right

everytime i reset the tensioner in my car, it takes a few km's of driving for the oil pressure to build up in the chain tensioner and set properly

I didnt get a new chain actually, something I probably should have done though. I installed a vernier gear but that shouldnt have affected the chain. I think its going to need to be driven to get some oil pressure up.
