Whilst removing the head of my xr, i noticed that the chain tensioner is broken.
what's involved in replacing it?
will i need to remove the sump or is there a way around it?

the guide or the tensioner is broken? tensioner is easy, Repco and that sell them (usually don't have one in stock but quick to order), you just remove theold one out the hole and in with the new. The guides are more difficult, involves removing the harmonic balancer so that the timing cover can be removed and possiably dropping the sump in order to get the cover back on.

no it didn't fall down into the sump, but it's broken about halfway down from where the bolt goes in.
by the looks of it, you have to replace it, you can't just leave it broken.
looks like i'll be doing a sump gasket too :(

that is just a guide not a tensioner.
that is held in by the timing case and the top bolt. they are common to break and most people just leave them.
