I recently had tm engine rebuilt [6 months, 4000km ago] and last week while driving home from work something started to rattle in the engine a couple hundred metres from home, however it was still running fine. So the next day i took the rocker cover off and there is a piece of metal laying next to the top sprocket of the timming chain!
Ive now taken it back to where i had the engine built and they have replaced the tensioner, timing chain and other associated pieces, but something is not right and now it is VERY noisy, and they are continuing to work on the car until they completely rectify the problem. They tell me that they have heard of the tensioner bracking before, but it has never happened to one of "their" engines. Has this happened to any one else before??? And does anyone know what might have caused it???

The tensioner may not have the spring released, the only other thing is if one of the chain guides is damaged/broken

if they replaced timing chain they would have replaced the guides as well i assume, something similar has happened to my engine im not gonna investigate to far because i think its going to be easier to put a new engine in. im sure if they have had the timing case off they should have benn able to see any obvious problems seems a little strange to me

thats the first time i've heard of the actual tensioner breaking.
the guides are a common problem (mainly the top one that isnt OVERLY important) but the tensioner is usually fine.

its fairly common for the one on the other side to snap, but the one thats broken on urs i the less common to go.

it is actually the one on the passenger side of the car that the tensioner backes up to. It snapped in 2.

The tensoiner is on the drivers side
If its the top half of the passenger side guide you can get by without it.

I am just puting my input in. I had my engine re-built 9 months ago and its done the exact same thing last week, mabey a faulty tensioner? or if it was ran with the tensioner not adjusted. thats about all I could come up with for mine. Mine was done by a mechanic also so I can only guess. Cheers
