Yep sure is... As long as you undid it before putting the centre plug in so it springs apart like you've shown and presses on the guide...
Still shouldn't rattle at all but... Because you had it overloaded the first time you have broken or excessively worn the guide and you may now be stuck with that rattle... The guides are rather brittle... And doing what you did with the tensioner may have damaged it... Cheers, Tim

Thank you for this guide
Did mine today using this guide I also fitted a vernier gear and advanced the timing by about 3-4 degree's for some low down power hopefully this should give the old EF a new lease on life power wise, Only thing i had problem's with was getting the gear back in the right position teeth wise didn't move the crank or cam at all to help my cause so fingers crossed |

what is the rattle at 1500rpm, i have done this so many times and changed the guides twice and the chain twice and i cant get rid of that chain rattle. with the stethoscope is sounds like its coming from the bottom where that little chain guide sits in the timing cover. any clues? the only thing i havn't changed is the three chain gears. do they need changing?

Are you using stiffer than stock valve springs and/or a bigger than stock cam? |

No. Everything is standard spec. Its a motor I fully rebuilt. We had the head shaved and the block shaved also. Can't work this one out.

You have shaved the head and block. How much did you shave off the head and block? Have you reset the chain tensioner properly? |

Tensioner has been reset and replaced at least 10 times by myself and mechanic.. . Shave I'm not sure how much they shaved off. I'd say they shaved off the minimum coz there was nothing wrong with it before the rebuild. It was a running engine, I just opened it up and machined everything and put new everything inside. It's an AU engine that I put into my ED, was a nice project end everything is fine apart from that rattle at 1500 and while it revs down.

The "new" AU motor in my ED had a leaky tensioner... Fixed it this morning.... Was very slowly getting an oil slick up the front of the power steering pump bracket and in and around no1 plug and took me a bit of looking around to see where it was coming from... Really hard to see on AU with that bracket being the way it is...
Got some high res photos to add in here and compliment CJH's work... The AU retainer is slightly different I notice with only 1 thread section and an O ring on the end... And can't remember is the centre plug had the middle O ring on the ED or not, but does on the AU... I replaced the very clearly buggered O ring on the retainer with a generic one from the shops... You need one which is about 2mm series... I bought home the grab pack from work and it on has 3mm ones that are the right diameter and it wouldn't screw in... And added some sealer to it so it hopefully stays sealed for good... Because the other O rings do rather little I didn't both changing them... Damaged O ring photos... The contrast turn out bad but if you zoom in you can see it... This is the wrong O ring... It is the 3mm one which was too large for the groove in the side of the block... And the old one which hardly looks like an O ring anymore... Assembly photos / Resetting Photos... Cheers, Tim

Tragilgas wrote: Are you using stiffer than stock valve springs and/or a bigger than stock cam? I am. My cam and spring combo is quite extreme, plus the head has been shaved to the seats. As a result, the factory tensioner is nowhere near up to the task. In the last 8 weeks I have been through 3 adjusters and repaired two, which have also died again. The problem is, if I increase the preload on the tensioner, I risk causing damage to the auxiliary shaft. I decided that a making a manual adjuster was my best option, which would allow me to take up the slack in the chain without loading up the auxiliary shaft. This pic is fairly self explanatory. If all goes well over the next month or so, I might even make a few of them if anyone is interested.
I will be installing this one today, then just got to find the right amount of play in the chain. Too loose will cause premature wear on the chain, gears, guides. Too tight will kill the auxiliary shaft bore. This is not something you would normally consider for a mild, or even moderate setup. It takes a fairly aggressive cam and heavy springs to push the tensioner back against the engines oil pressure. Basically the stock setup should handle a decent cam upgrade, 25% stiffer springs, and heaps off the head. The tensioner itself has more adjustment available than you should ever need. Even with the head shaved past the factory limit indicators, I'm using less than half of the available adjustment. (Fairly new chain and guides). Remember, worn or broken guides, stretched chain, worn tensioner bore in timing cover, worn tensioner cam, low oil pressure, faulty or blocked (or missing) check valve,....There are many things that can cause timing chain rattle.

Falcon96XR6 wrote: Well depending on price im interested still Right'o, will make another one when I get a chance. Seems to be doing the job quite nicely. Just went for a 20km run with multiple 6000rpm+ pulls, all good. Left the chain a bit loose just to see how it sounded. Much quieter than before. Still a slight rattle so I'll wind it in a bit more tomorrow and see how she goes. Best thing is I can get to it without pulling anything off.
