If I line up all marks on the timing chain, how many revolutions of engine will it need before they all line up again?
This has been pissing me off all day, can't seem to get it right and yanking my hair out currently. Also when all timing marks are lined up does that out engine at TDC? (Because it isn't, nothing I do will let that happen). |

Make sure you are using the right timing marks.
All the sprockets on a hybrid are of the AU type and have a 10mm line cast into them. If you are using an AU chain with the yellow painted links, you can use these marks. the yellow links need to line up on these marks and the engine should be timed. If you are using an EL chain with no painted links, then you need to ignore these AU marks and look for the old style e-series marks. The cam sprocket will have a little dot stamped to the right of one of the teeth. This dot should be on the direct opposite of AU timing mark. This dot needs to be 3mm above the level of the left side of the head. If you look between the aux sprocket and crank sprocket, there will be a dot stamped into the block. The dot on the aux sprocket needs to point at the dot on the block. The crank sprocket is a little different. When I rebuilt mine, it only had what appeared to be one timing mark on the sprocket, a small line. This technically should point at the dot on the block. So the aux and crank sprocket markers are pointing at each other. But I found that the engine was 180deg out. I looked closer and there was a very slight dot stamped into the think directly opposite the line. So I used that as the timing mark, and everything lined up. So basically I ended up with the dot on the cam sprocket 3mm above the left side of the head and the 2 dots on the aux and crank sprockets points at each other, which is also pointing at the dot stamped into the block. There should be no slack on the left side of the chain when it goes round and the timing marks shouldnt move. And all the AU marks were pointing in different directions. Hope this helps. |

Good picture of the 2 different timing marks on the sprocket.
You have the straight lines that look like the right marks, but in the last picture, you can see the small dot that looks like a hole punch just above the head. Early hybrids used EL chains without coloured links. Later ones maybe had the AU chain, wouldn't surprise me the way Ford chop and change parts at model changeovers. Oh, and don't forget to check the ignition timing when your done. It will probably be 10 degrees out. Although I disagree with his comment on 1600 engines. Probably more like 16,000 engines. It was a 7 month changeover. |

I am at the point where I'm going to rip this goddamn engine out and buy another =\
Nothing I do can get it to fire, best I can get is backfiring but no even trying to start, not even a catch on fire. Tried TDC, tried opposite TDC. Tried 4-5 dizzy cog teeth either side on either TDC. What else can I try???? |

Any idea what I should look for.
The timing chain has the coloured marks which I have lined up. Could the crank be out 360deg? Any thing else I should check. Had front off engine yesterday too make sure the links hadn't jumped a tooth but they were still fine, at a complete loss here. |

Another thing, the engine is bored out 1mm over and 1mm over pistons and rings yet when I remove a plug there is no compression felt at the sparkplug hole. Could this be cam timing?
So frustrated |

At a loss. Pulled front off engine again to confirm timing is perfect which it is. Is identical to another running EL Hybrid engine I have here. Have swapped everything possible and can't get anything =\
Completely lost here. |
