dude, you unlock it so the pins come out from the first jagged tooth, and let it sit where it wants to

theres no way to keep mucking around with it to set the tension to a required force

usually from cam changes where they dont release the tensioner and try hold the cam gear up with rope or the old broom handle trick.or where they have unscrewd the tensioner retainer and done it back up without releasing the tension..
usually results in either broken chain guides, snaped aux shaft chain gear bolt or wears the aux shaft running surface of the block...

you can usually tell if its over tight, it will give a supercharger like whine from the cam chain,,

ahh... good to know.. I've done the rope trick when changing head gaskets myself.. except I used fencing wire and the shed roof support beam to make sure there was no release of tension.

There was still movement in the chain guide on mine despite my dis-engaging it too far.. so I be pretty surprised if I've damaged anything.

Now that I've fixed my water leak. (turned out it was the metal heater pipe meeting to the water pump that was leaking) I have only to pop the tensioner out and reassemble it and release it properly and I'll be driving my new engine'd manual EL... can't wait.

Keep looking at the pictures and thinking about it... - you'll get it eventually

WHETHER it should be pretensioned is the real issue - but as I said, I've found that taking it one click - certainly if it's near enough there that it doesn't take much force - works aok.

I was told that you just unlock the tentioner and when the oil pressure get up it'll adjust itself as it needs.

Like I said...

- and yes, oil pressure is all that's needed to make it all work ok - I've SAID that - and illustrated it by explaining that I've personally run my engine for over a year with just the plunger and spring and that worked fine - in fact it might have even been ok without the spring but it's good insurance to avoid the plunger disengaging from the guide.

My point is that if so desired, the tensioner CAN be pretensioned - it's DESIGNED to be able to do that - is what the funny little scollops are on the rear side of the slot.

I'm a bit peeved now, as I just took it all out and discovered I'd done it right the first time. It wasn't fully released.

After this discussion I've just fully locked it, put it in place and the retainer.. then used the allen key to unlock it and put it on the start of the slope.. presumably if I put as little tension on the chain as possible, the oil will do the rest. Seems to work as there is no chain noise. There is another bigger problem though, but that is another post.

thankyou all.

regards

Frank
