you might have some luck with wrapping some sort of webbed strap (stronger) around the balancer several times, and then tieing it off somewhere. Other than that, are there any markings or anything on the balancer?

Not sure if its at all similar to the V8, but this is how i got mine undone...

I'm guessing the retaining bolt is big? i.e. 24mm or bigger?

Get yourself a 1/2inch drive (i.e. one u can bend to 90deg) and the appropriate socket. Might pay to disconnect the coil pack for this...

EDIT: Oh yeah, might want to get a 1/2inch extension as well - you need to make sure the hinge on the 1/2inch drive is a straight 90 degrees.

Sit the socket on the bolt head. Rest the 1/2 inch drive against the chassis (i.e. socket sitting on bolt, 1/2inch drive at 90 degrees, with handle of drive pushed firmly against the bottom right of the engine bay).

Now turn it over. The engine will want to turn clockwise... the handle of the 1/2inch drive is sitting on the frame and thus, holds the bolt stationary... the engine will undo the bolt...

Please tell me the cog behind the balancer is not the 36-1 tooth EDIS wheel?!?!?!?!?

That's how I did mine. I cranked mine over from the starter relay though. That way I could keep an eye on things.

I also removed the radiator, the extra room is worth it.

some good news guys
got the balancer off thank to you guys :D
another small problem after replacing the balancer with a new one
put everything back together it starts & runs fine but when i drive it it doesn't change gears until it hits around 3500rpm in each gear & changes hard, you can also feel it kick back down a gear when stopping. is this Limp mode??? or have just knocked something??
i did clean the throttle body out & did have both sensors off the throttle body when i cleaned it
if limp mode how do i get it back to normal

thanks for all your help guys
Cheers

Limp home mode is only 3rd gear so it doesn't change gears.

When you cleaned the throttle body, did you plug the TPS back in? Trans mission uses the Throttle Position Sensor for gear changes, like an old kick down cable.
