g'day guys i have 91 EB s Pak MPEFI 5spd with a very tired 240000km 3.9L and im looking to fit a 4L of some discription.

I assume the 4L is a much better motor correct?

I have heard that EF-EL long motors bolt up to my manifolds etc.
what about the Dual plane EF manifold? could i hook up a vacuum switch to operate the butterfly? I'm a 4th year apprentice mechanic and i work on these things all day.

what else do i have to consider? would i need a EF ECU If i wanted to swap manifolds or are the MAP sensors and TPS sensors similar?

i can get a 140000km EF motor complete with manifolds for $750- sound about right?

i think rings and bearings should be done while it's out.

thanks in advance for your help.

EF's had a coil pack... so consider that, you might need an EL loom? they will support your dizzy....

if you're interested I have a whole MPFI 3.9L engine...??

Cheers

There is really only 35cc differance between the 3.9 & the 4.0 engines. Most of the performance improvements were gain in the head and induction design. Weight this up when making your decision, as to change to a BBM I believe you need to change the ECU, loom, vacuum lines etc.

Actually the induction system on EBII/ED is pretty much the same as the 3.9L, it is only the EF/EL that had the BBM.

You can pretty much drop a 4L straight into where a 3.9L was but take note of:
- On manuals the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate are different. There are more bolts to the crank than the 3.9L (I assume autos would be similar, but perhaps the torque convertor will bolt to the newer flexplate)
- If you get an EF/L engine, they have a coil pack instead of a distributor, however, if you remove the sensor where the distributor sits on a pre-EF model you can put your distributor straight in.

The ef's used a coil pack and had a different wiring loom it wond work, The eL would fit in ur car but will need some little mods like different water pump pipe, acceleration cable and i beleive u have to modify the plug on the injector loom iv been told it isnt hard, and the fuel lines need a bit of modifying. If u change these things it should work been a dissy motor and all. I think the eL's used a similar wiring loom so all the wirering should be in the right place.

The u have to get all the EL bolt on accessories, EL's also ran thermo fans :?

probably better to get a EB 4.0ltr motor and just put the BBM mainfold on it that way u can use the cluch fan and all the accessories.

As cartman02au said

On manuals the flywheel, clutch could be different. U will have to get the 4.0ltr flywheel and clutch as well. Im not sure of the bell housing.

the 4ltr/3.9ltr flywheel is the same.. the clutch is different... in that the 4ltr clutch was a 6 bolt, hence a different flywheel.. so if you use 3.9ltr flywheel, and clutch, you'll be fine.. however an EA flywheel with a 4ltr clutch won't work without drilling holes.

Cheers

in not making sense above lol.. here's what I meant to say:

4ltr flywheel has 6 holes for the 6 bolt clutch...

3.9Ltr flywheel is physically exactly the same, just that the 3 extra holes for the clutch aren't exactly drilled right through.

So, physically they are the same, except for the clutch differences.

Cheers

You can use your wiring loom and manifolds, the EF motor accepts your old dizzy, it drops in in the same place it is in your old block, just use your old ancillaries (aircon pump, etc etc) and main pulley, and just run the clutch fan.

It seems that to use the BBM and to get its full potential you have to use the EF computer (but then your trip computer will stop working if you have one),

the EF motor should still have a bit more go than your 3.9 as the head flows better

But if he does that he still ahs to modify some things to get the car to work, like the mods i mentioned above about the manifold.
