Hey all,
Need an exhaust for the XR6, heard redback is the way to go.
I don't want it to be quiet, so I want one without the rear resonator.

The dude at the exhaust shop says that if i want it without the rear resonatot mandrel bending isn't required, hence it can be done cheaper...
Is this right?

I would have thought that any configuration of exhaust, regardless of muffling devices, could be mandrel or press bent depending on your preference?

Unless its something to so with the redback kits?

Yeah I can choose, but he said there will be no point paying the extra for the mandrel bending, which is what I'm trying to figure out.

Yeah im just not sure what it is about having no resonator that means there is no point??

Idea of mandrel bending is the same regardless of what muffling devices are attached... so the decision remains... are you willing to spend the extra dosh for that little extra bit of performance?

basically as far as I can see and have gatehred from discussions with blokes at exhaust shops (doing deliveries for Repco in my Uni breaks I meet a fair few of them), there should be no price difference between mandrell and press bent exhaust!
Why?
Because if you want a mandrell bent exhaust, the exhaust shop orders it from RedBack or Lukey, or whoever, and pretty much just bolts it on. It's already all piped, bent and has mufflers on - Lukey, Redback, whoever, have a few options on muffler configurations too.
If you want it press bent, they can do likewise and order a press bent one - but I know for a fact that Lukey only do press bent exhaust for stock replacements (the pipe has to be stock size, so if you want bigger then they go to mandrell bends).
Or the ehxuast man can hop on there bender and press bend you up a custom exhaust.
No exhaust shops around her have a mandrell bender. It's cheaper and easier for them to order the ehxuast and just bolt them in now. They all still have press benders (which are a lot cheaper than mandrell benders) still to make custom exhausts for cars that they can't order already made ones or any special cases and such.

As for weather to get a mandrell bent exhaust over a press bent. Hell yeah! If you compare the bends you'll see why straight away!

O, and as for thee exhaust shop man talking about mandrell bends not required with no rear resinator. Mandrell bends arn't required for either!
Basically both are the exact same set up, same bends are reqquired in the same places for both!!! The only difference is that near the end the one has a resinator, while the other has straight pipe in the same place!!!
I'd consider trying a few other exhaust shops...

Bascically, bottom line of my opiinion is pay the extra for mandrell bending. Don't get the rear resinator if your young like me and like it loud! Find out exactly what exhaust he's putting on, is he ordering a kit one like I was saying above and just fitting it, or is he actually got a mandrell bender and going to bend it all up for you?

Just order a redback system without resonator, will be mandrel bent, sound great and set you back about $260-$300.

Yep, agreed.
Except I have the resonator, cause I'm a pansy :P
That exhaust shp guy is talking out his a***.
I think the point he's trying to make is because there will be no resonator, there will be increased flow, so you can go press bent.
s**t argument.
Resonators restrict flow f**k all.
I read somewhere that a 2.5" press bend (dunno what radius or angle, tighter the angle and radius, the more flow restriction) flows comparitvely as much as a 2.25" mandrel bend.
So basically same as stock :P

If your really after good flow, then you need to fit 2 3/4" or so mufflers to your 2 1/2" piping, bell the pipe/flange just before and after the mufflers. Reason is that a 2 3/4" straight through muffler has about the same flow rate as a straight peice of 2 1/2" pipe, so if you want to keep constant flow rate then that's the way to go. But I'm sure it's overkill and will make one third of f**k all difference for all the effort involved!

if you get a redback there the same price to have the rear hotdog ot stright pipe it would be like $300

i was talking to dyno steave when i was enquiring about an exhust, mandrel bent does nothing much and isnt worth it, stainless steel, if u have ever taped stainless steel u get a pitchy sound, which means ur exhust will sound not as good, and stainless is really only for show cars.

i would like to know what is on the v6 commodore exhust which makes them sound better then any au.?
