I'm going to be changing my valve springs soon without taking the head off.
I have been doing a bit of research, and it seems I need to compress the cylinder with air to prevent the valve from falling in deep confines of the cylinder. Does anyone know where i can get such a tool? I read about making one with a spark plug, but a bought option would be better, as i'm not too friendly with the welder 
Can any one help, or let me know other ways of achieving the same result? Adrian

Take ytour spark plug down to your local hydraulic place, or somewhere like coventries, and see if they can do something for ya! And then just get an adaptor between that and your air compressors hose/fitting.

Hey thats a good idea,
Is it considered "dodgy" to replace springs with the head on? Or should i really be taking the head off and replacing head studs too?

The head studs will be fine if you dont remove them! Id do it this way myself. And if worse comes to worse, you;ll have to take the head off. But youll be fine!

if you can get everything prepared for welding, exhaust shop panel beater should only charge $10 max to weld it for you.

the dodgy way is to bring the piston up to the top.. if your valve falls then it only rests on the piston.. seen that one done before.. worked a trat but maybe not the prefered method.. talk to Jaysen, he got a tool made up to pressurise the cylinder for what you are going to do.. hes a top bloke if he has the time he will tell you everything you need or for a small fee may even organise one for you..
I've witnessed both methods.. prefer using preasure.. if thats not avalible, the second has to do. easy witht he right tool.. BTW do you have a compressor?

Yeah I do have a compressor, thats not a problem.
I might try both methods, use compressed air, and have the piston all the way up, just incase we do push the valve too far and it falls in, we can fish it out. Maybe Jaysen might have a tool he can lend me

if you can't get one made there is an other way.
get along bit of thin rope, feed it in through the spark plug hole, then with a socket on the balancer bolt wind the engine over until the rope is all squished in the chamber. work just as well, and prolly a little safer too. |

I know Jaysen has the tool we used it on my car when the Stage 3 was installed and we changed the springs, a simple attachment that you screw in like a spark plug on one end and plug your compressor hose into the other. thats the piece you are talking bout right? He may let you borrow it if you leave a deposit.. but he is an honest trusting guy, so you can always ask. you got his number?

A third way which is slightly less dodgy than DC_Todd's is to feed sash cord rope into the plug hole when it is nearing TDC on that cylinder then turn the motor gently by hand until the rope supports the valves. The only problem is you need to turn the motor backwards to be able to remove the rope and some motors don't like this.
