yeah, the coolant starts to boil/evapourate(builds up pressure) around that point, depending on the mix. Just replace the thermostat, cos it should be done anyway... or just take it out, and see if it makes a difference.

Mine will sit around 90-95 on a 40degree plus day, then rockets off the screen when turned off, to around 110, never hurt.

Check your thermo fans to see if they are operating properly. If so, when the car is very hot, and you have AC on, they both should be running on high speed, wheres if the car is cold and you have AC on, only one should be running on high speed. This is the reason your car tends to 'cool' when you turn the AC on. In fact it heats, but the extra thermo cancels this out.

Sounds like a partialluy blocked radiator to me.
Try flushing your radiator and always use correct coolant with the I6. The wrong coolant is bad for your head and other alloy parts. Can react with the head and cause premature ejacu, sorry.........corrosion!
