Put a jack handle or similar over your ratchet handle to increase the torque effort - the tensioner has to go in a clockwise direction (looking rearward), and you fit a 5mm drill bit in the hole near the wear indicator to take the tension. Release tension on the ratchet handle. Undo the 3 x 10mm bolts and remove the tensioner and belt.

I did this today, as I was getting noises from my tensioner in the wagon - which I repacked the bearings a few weeks ago. The belt was a bastard to get off last time and to put on - checked it with a spare I had, no wonder, it was smaller, to the extent you couldn't rotate the tensioner as the bottom pulley was next to the harmonic balancer.
So make sure the belt is the correct one - the spare was easy to fit - no more noises, either.

Remove the thermo fans, only takes a couple of minutes. Makes life a lot easier.

3/8 rachet in bottom tension pulley, push towards the drivers side. and tension released.
i usually put an insulated wire on the belt at the water pump and pull up and off, never had any issues.
