HEy guys i have an Ef XR6 it has extractors 2 1/2 inch exhaust, shaved head, slotted rotors and its an auto. the tow bar on it is the ford one rated at 1600KG i think. i have to tow a 1965 thunderbird complete from the engine shop a decent distance to the auto elec. do you guys think i will be able to do it safely, whithout rooting my car. Oh its also been maintaind maticulously so my auto and engine is in good condition.

people tow BIG boats with falcons, so it should be fine, just go easy on it and watch the temperature gauge.
and if u don't have a big transmission cooler, i would look into installing one.. I also heard manually shifting is better on the gearbox? can anyone confirm this? |

yeah i thought it wul be fine im just double checking, i dont have a tranny cooler, i never thought of putting one on because im planning to do a manual conversion as soon as my tbird is complete. the thunderbird weighs about 2 tonne plus trailer thats why i was a bit conserned. how would manually shifting help??? i just thought to pop it into sport mod so it automatically holds the gears longer and shift a bit harder.

you wont be towing cars after the conversion. Ford say the manuals can only tow 500kg I think.

Just keep in mind a T Bird on a car trailer is over your maximum allowed limit on the car, therefore should anything go wrong, no insurance. Best off getting something rated to tow the weight. |

Get a tow truck. Its way over the limit and you will cook your transmission.
Just think incase of an emergency and you have to pull up quick |

ive towed a couple of falcons on car trailers when it was auto, did it no good.
a freind towed my car from melb to workshop in the country (120km up the hume) and fried the trans oil in his car. funny thing is he was towing my car due to the auto having blown up 
without a trans cooler take small stints giveing it time too cool if you have to make the trip. |

thanks for the help guys, im trying to convince a mate atm with a V8 landrover to do it for me after thinking about. It seemed a bit iffy to do it, but i think i would be devestated if i lost both cars in one go if some idiot decides to cut me off and i cant pull up.

I just brought another EB2 Fairmont home from Sydney on Thursday behind the EB2GLI, auto with EL engine, trans.cooler, EL fans and XR6 diff. A hot day, plenty of traffic and long hills between Western Sydney and near Newcastle. No problems at all with the Falcon pulling a properly car setup trailer. The handling of that setup requires experience though, it is too easy to get it sideways or swaying going downhill, even 80kph can be too fast.
As the other guys have said, watch the temperature, I don't think the old clutch fan could have handled it as good and I would have had to do it at night to try and keep the tranny [and engine] cool. I have towed my 450SEL Merc. [with a standard EB2] which is about the same weight as your T-bird for a shorter distance but wouldn't do that too often or for too long as I think that's past the upper limits of sensible towing with a Falcon. The auto box changes ok normally, but select at least 3rd on downhill grades and take it slow. I don't know what you mean by a 'fair distance' but if it involves a lot of hills or traffic do what ELGT and kermey suggest and get a tow truck, you really are on or past the limit for the car and would require a lot of experience at towing to handle any misbehaviour by the trailer. Hey this is actually something I've wondered about regarding the weight limits, like you can also get a hayman reece towbar kit which is rated for 2300 or so, so I would assume they designed that regarding what the car can handle, yet you guys are discussing it on a 1600kg rated towbar, that mean it's still safe enough to do so above the limit of the actual towbar?
Also is there any legal issues if it is towing something over it's limit? I've just wondered for a fair while regarding the limits as you see people doing similiar stuff discussed, but I know next to nothing regarding towing just wondering, more in regards to the towbars actual limits...

it will tow it easy as, just dont take off hard otherwise you may stretch the body

me and my mate towed a 98 fairmont with a 97 falcon with a real car trailer from bunbury to Duncraig - in perth
the tow ball was rated at 1600 and we where over that limit by far

the car has s**t loads of power to do it, just dont want to stretch anything while your doing it. You see some falcons that have towed caravans over the years and you see the door gaps are quite big from being stretched
